Marthakal Homelands Resoure Centre
Marthakal Homelands and Resource Centre Aboriginal Corporation services the residents of Marthakal Homelands, and cares for land and sea country in the Marthakal region. The services include Marthakal Homelands Health Service - established in 2001 to provide a range of primary health care services across approximately 15,000 square kilometres in remote Arnhem Land; Marthakal Homeland Services - municipal and maintenance services and capital infrastructure, Marthakal Housing Services - providing repairs and maintenance to remote housing.
An experienced Mechanical and Workshop Services Lead is required to co-ordinate and facilitate mechanical repairs.
Responsibilities
1. Mechanical Services and Repairs
- Carry out servicing, diagnosis, and repairs on vehicles, trailers, outboards, small engines, and other mechanical assets.
- Maintain clear service logs, work orders, and fault reports.
- Implement preventative maintenance schedules in line with warranty, safety, and asset lifecycle requirements.
2. Workshop Management
- Maintain a clean, well-organised, and WHS-compliant workshop.
- Monitor and manage workshop tools, spare parts, fluids, and consumables.
- Maintain an inventory of critical parts and supplies.
3. Logistics and Asset Readiness
- Work closely with the Procurement and Logistics Specialist to schedule servicing based on operational needs.
- Support vehicle bookings, availability tracking, and service downtime planning.
- Ensure remote field kits (tools, spares, recovery equipment) are maintained and ready for field operations.
4. Training and Support
- Mentor and supervise Yolnu workers or apprentices in mechanical trades.
- Provide hands-on training and guidance in safety, tools use, and mechanical systems.
- Help identify candidates for structured training (e.g. Cert II Automotive or Heavy Vehicle Maintenance).
5. Administration and Reporting
- Provide regular reporting to the Community and Economic Development Manager on service schedules, critical repairs, asset risk, and workshop performance.
- Ensure all records are logged in asset and fleet management systems.
- Support budgeting and parts procurement by providing accurate service cost forecasts.
Selection Criteria
Essential
- Trade-qualified Mechanic (Cert III Light or Heavy Vehicle or Diesel Mechanic).
- Proven experience in servicing and repairing vehicles and mechanical equipment, including diesel and petrol motors, trailers, and marine engines.
- High-level mechanical problem-solving and diagnostic skills.
- Solid organisational skills and ability to manage a workshop environment.
- Experience working independently and collaboratively across diverse teams.
- Ability to work respectfully and effectively with Yolŋu staff and community members.
Desirable
- Experience supervising apprentices or mentoring staff.
- Knowledge of remote and off-road vehicle maintenance.
- Current NT Driver’s Licence (manual), preferably MR or HR.
- Experience in fleet management or asset tracking systems.
- Ochre Card (Working with Children) and First Aid Certificate.
