A vacancy currently exists for a Maintenance Fitter at our Bannockburn Hatchery/Farms (near Geelong), Victoria. The successful applicant must be prepared to work directly with livestock, after hours and on weekends.
The Broiler Hatchery Maintenance Worker (Boilermaker Qualified) is responsible for performing routine and preventative maintenance, mechanical repairs, and fabrication work at the hatchery facility. This role ensures that all equipment and infrastructure operate efficiently and safely, with particular emphasis on pressure systems, steam lines, heating systems, and other mechanical components commonly associated with hatchery environments. The position supports the hatchery’s production goals by minimizing downtime and maintaining compliance with biosecurity and safety standards
Responsibilities & Key Deliverables:
· Conduct maintenance and repairs on hatchery equipment, including incubators, hatchers, HVAC systems, ventilation, and water systems.
· Use boilermaker skills to inspect, fabricate, weld, and repair pressure vessels, piping, tanks, and other structural or mechanical components.
· Perform scheduled preventative maintenance on critical hatchery systems.
· Diagnose mechanical issues and troubleshoot equipment malfunctions quickly and efficiently.
· Fabricate custom metal components to support hatchery infrastructure and projects.
· Maintain and repair boilers, steam systems, and heat exchangers used in the hatchery environment.
· Monitor equipment performance and recommend improvements to enhance reliability and efficiency.
· Ensure maintenance activities comply with company biosecurity, health and safety, and animal welfare standards.
· Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, inspections, and equipment logs.
· Collaborate with hatchery supervisors and production staff to minimize equipment-related disruptions to operations.
· Participate in installation and commissioning of new equipment or system upgrades.
· Maintain cleanliness and organization in maintenance work areas and equipment rooms.
Knowledge/Experience, Skills and Qualifications:
· Trade Qualification: Boilermaker / Metal Fabricator (Certificate III in Engineering - Fabrication Trade or equivalent)
· Proven experience in a mechanical maintenance or fabrication role, preferably within poultry, agricultural, or industrial settings.
· Sound knowledge of mechanical systems, welding techniques (TIG, MIG, Stick), metal fabrication, and blueprint interpretation.
· Experience working with boilers, steam systems, or pressure vessels (advantageous).
· Familiarity with hatchery or poultry processing equipment is desirable but not essential.
· Ability to work autonomously and as part of a team.
· Strong problem-solving skills and mechanical aptitude.
· Understanding of biosecurity protocols and safety regulations.
· Valid driver's license (forklift or confined space certification is a plus).
