Job Title: Pharmacy Technician
About the Role:
This position involves providing operational support to a multi-disciplinary clinical team by optimising the use of medication to promote patient health, wellness and disease prevention. The successful applicant will work closely with clinical pharmacists, prescription clerks and other healthcare professionals to deliver safe, effective and efficient systems for repeat prescribing, medicines optimisation and reducing medicines waste.
Main Responsibilities:
* Undertake medicines reconciliation in accordance with practice protocols and update patients' medical records and prescribing accordingly.
* Support the achievement of the practice's prescribing Quality and Outcomes Framework targets.
* Work with clinical pharmacists and pharmacy administrators to contribute to the review and development of repeat prescribing protocols and Standard Operating Procedures.
* Provide advice to GPs, staff and patients on changes to prescribing to support the improvement of prescribing safety, quality and cost-effectiveness.
* Build searches and participate in medication audits and prescribing safety projects.
* Assist in the appropriate monitoring and management of prescribing budgets and liaise with the medicines management team.
* Prepare evidence-based resources and information to support the implementation of rational cost-effective prescribing.
* Support the provision of medication reviews, patient information leaflets and medicine awareness, as well as undertake community visits as appropriate.
* Take a proactive approach to the safe handling of prescriptions, including assessment of risk and making recommendations for improvement.
* Respond to medication queries from patients and staff in a professional manner, referring to the appropriate clinician in accordance with practice protocols.
* Advise on the sourcing and safe management of medicines, as appropriate.
* Assist in the submission of claims for personally administered drugs, as required.
* Be responsible for the organisation, planning and administration of own workload to meet set deadlines.
* Take a proactive approach to training administration team members and new members joining the pharmacy team.
* Responsibility for administration, including taking messages and passing on information, computer data entry, initiating contact with and responding to requests from patients, other team members and associated healthcare professionals and providers.
* Maintain a positive, patient-focused culture and a supportive culture across the whole practice team.
* Perform any other duties commensurate with this position, dependent on current and evolving practice workload and staffing levels.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
* Registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) as a Pharmacy Technician.
* Evidence of Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
* Certificate in medicines reconciliation or equivalent experience.
* Recent previous experience within a comparable role in General Practice.
* Previous experience working within a patient-facing role.
* Experience of prescribing/clinical systems, such as SystmOne or EMIS Web.
* Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
* Good organisational skills.
* Ability to work under pressure in a busy environment.
* Ability to work as part of a team.
* Ability to plan, prioritise and organise workload.
* Teaching skills.
* Continued commitment to improve skills and ability in new areas of work.
