The Analytical Services Branch (ASB) consists of a team of over 100 staff based in Port Melbourne and North Ryde. We are responsible for conducting chemical and biological measurements for sectors including food, health and environment. We perform a diverse range of tests, including but not limited to:
- Microbiological
- Allergen
- Element
- Nutrient
- Contaminants
Providing analytical solutions and technical expertise to the private sector and government agencies to allow them to meet their business, research and regulatory compliance needs.
**About the LIMS Simplification Project **:NMI is embarking upon a project to implement a new Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS). The LIMS Simplification Project is a collaborative project involving stakeholders from across different branches of NMI and the Department. The aims of the project are to:
- Provide a unified foundation for NMI's chemical and biological laboratories
- Reduce risks related to the maintenance and security of ICT systems
- Improve process efficiency and service delivery
- Improve client satisfaction.
**The opportunity**:
As a Laboratory & LIMS Analyst, your substantive position is Laboratory analyst/chemist for the Analytical Services Branch.
The role requires experience with trace level chemical analysis of environmental or food samples. NMI is currently implementing a new LIMS for the Analytical Services branch (project is 2 years duration).
During the LIMS project you will report to the Senior LIMS Developer.

- Laboratory experience with the analysis of samples for trace level chemical analytes in environmental or food samples.
- Knowledge of scientific laboratory processes and the Quality Assurance and Quality Systems principles and practices according to ISO17025.
- Demonstrated experience and strong understanding of LIMS principles and concepts associated to lab processes, preferably with ability to write basic LIMS scripts and routines such as SQL queries.
- Demonstrated ability to work co-operatively and effectively in a team environment in accordance with equity provisions.
- Experience working in high paced project environment.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills and experience writing technical documentation.
