Foci Education is a tuition centre in Burwood that specialises in English tuition for students from Kindergarten through to Year 12. It is a small but growing firm with a distinct community of discerning students and families who are committed to learning.
About the role
Being a successful English Tutor (K-10) at Foci Education starts with a love for seeing students grow into the most capable versions of themselves through their education. And with the support of working directly next to the co-founders and co-principals of the tutoring centre, you will not only have the opportunity to see this goal materialise, but also see yourself rewarded with the chance to grow into other areas of the business.
All new tutors begin with a
4-week paid training period
(at their base rate) under supervision before taking on independent classes.
Current employment models
Option A – Base Only
Casual Employment
You'll be paid a fixed hourly rate (based on experience and level) with paid training.
Option B – Hybrid (Base + Profit Share)
Seasonal Contract (bi-annual)
You'll receive a slightly reduced hourly base rate plus profit sharing on classes you independently teach (after probation).
The current proposed role is a casual role projected to start at the beginning of ****, with the opportunity of annual renewals. On offer is
8.0 hours of work per week
with potentially
extra hours available
during certain weeks of the school term. Please keep in mind that Foci Education is closed during the NSW school holidays (please see NESA's academic timeline for **** here: schooling/calendars/****)
The indicative base-pay hourly rate for this position is A$32-A$72 per hour, however individual qualifications and experiences will determine the final rate prior to starting.
Qualifications
You are in —at least— your
second year
of university studying an
applicable degree
that's writing intensive (journalism, communications, creative writing, law, history, philosophy).
Completed HSC with a
Band 6
in
Advanced English
/
E3
or higher
in
Extension English
.
Strong communication skills
that let you converse as freely and comfortably with small groups of students in a teaching capacity to deliver a memorable teaching experience, as well as with colleagues to build and strengthen professional rapports.
Ability to deliver great customer experiences
in any environment and to be invigorated by constant personal interaction whether it be via email, over the phone, or in-person — for instance, onboarding new students and liaising with parents about results or overdue payments.
You have a keen eye for detail in reviewing lesson plans, but also a passion for delivering content and lessons in an engaging manner — we will support you with our own resources.
You are scrupulous, consistent and sensitive when it comes to giving marked feedback to students — written and verbal.
Willing to learn how to craft lesson plans and write learning content that is informed, and in line with Foci Education's brand identity and ethos.
You have an agility to learn new products and features with an interest in technology, particularly Apple, Microsoft and Google products (e.g. Numbers/Sheet/Excel; Pages/Google Docs/Microsoft Word; and Keynote, Google Slides and Microsoft PowerPoint).
Having / willing to obtain a valid and current Working With Children's Check (WWCC)
Demonstrate a capacity to remain professional and level-headed when liaising with vendors (whenever rarely needed).
Bonus
You're passionate about Foci Education and eager to share that passion with others.
You have strong people skills—you're approachable, a good listener, and empathetic.
Your work hours will be based on business needs and may vary term by term.
A sense of humour and self-awareness about your own professional shortcomings (but also willing to address it)
About you
As an English tutor (K-10), most of the work you perform will involve you working directly with students at Foci Education — in particular our K-10 students. The bulk of your roles will include preparing and delivering tutorials to a selection of our students, with a smaller portion of your role being administrative in nature. That said, there is an opportunity to grow into a direct managerial role for the right applicant with remuneration in the business to match the increased responsibilities.
Always curious and attentive, you'll develop a deep care to help our students achieve academic success in the capacities they are capable of, and perhaps even help them with realising their untapped academic and personal potential as young professionals. While you will work with a cohort of very capable and gifted students, you will also have the opportunity to infrequently work with students who come from diverse family backgrounds (such as those with learning difficulties and/or language barriers). Whoever you work with, our most successful candidates will demonstrate and maintain a constant awareness of what Foci Education is about; they will not only exhibit a willingness to maintain Foci Education's academic rigour by delivering intellectually stimulating learning environments, but will — most importantly — exude a uniquely and charmingly human flair in their teaching, working and interactions with our clients.
Your success at Foci Education will be measured in the academic results of the students you teach, as well as the positive relationships you help establish and foster for Foci Education. You're proud to represent Foci Education as much as we are to have the opportunity to have you be part of our growing brand and team. Our pride in having you be part of our team will be realised in a range of employee benefits — KPI based rewards and competitive wages that match or beat industry award rates.
What's In It for You?
Hands-on experience in a well-established tuition centre in Sydney.
Direct working experience with the principal and directors of the business.
Mentorship and structured training to help build your professional skills.
Opportunities to work with a diverse range of students ranging from Kindy to Year 10 — they come from a range of socio-economic and educational backgrounds.
First hand experience communicating with parents and families across Sydney to understand how student learning fits into the broader tapestry of a student's formative years.
Networking opportunities — students' parents are often C-Suite executives or directors who work in the medical & healthcare, education & training, and Information & technology sectors.
Potential to grow into a lead tutor of English role as our centre grows — we are looking to create a talent pool for future leader-educators at Foci Education.
Paid
4-week training
at your base hourly rate.
Hours: 7–8 hours per week (during NSW school terms).
Employment renewal: bi-annually (Option B) or ongoing casual (Option A).
Closed during NSW school holidays.
