Mechanical Engineer / Estimator Steel Processing | Defence | Infrastructure Pay Range $77,000 - $80,000
APS Adelaide Profile Services is Australia's leading steel processing business. Partnering with BlueScope Steel, we supply Australian-made plate and profiles across Defence, Government Infrastructure, Mining & Resources, and Renewable Energy sectors. Due to continued growth, APS is seeking a Mechanical Engineer / Estimator to join our Adelaide-based team.
This role suits a practical engineer with strong commercial instincts who enjoys working close to production, customers, and real-world steel applications. About the Role This is a hands-on engineering and estimating position supporting quoting, project delivery, and continuous improvement across our processing operations.
You will be responsible for: Preparing accurate cost estimates and quotations for steel plate processing, profiling, bevel cutting, drilling, machining and coating Reviewing customer drawings (PDF/DXF/STEP) and specifications
Developing manufacturing methodologies, process routes and cost models Liaising with customers, suppliers, production and logistics teams Supporting Defence and infrastructure projects with technical input
Assisting with drawing review, minor design modifications and tolerance interpretation Identifying cost, yield and process improvements Supporting NCR reviews and technical root-cause analysis where required
Skills & Experience Degree in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent experience) Experience in steel fabrication, plate processing, machining or heavy manufacturing
Strong understanding of materials, particularly carbon steel and wear plate Ability to interpret engineering drawings and specifications Estimating or commercial experience highly regarded
Practical, solutions-focused mindset Strong communication skills and attention to detail Australian working rights required
Desirable (but not essential) Exposure to Defence, mining or infrastructure projects Experience with CAD/CAM or nesting software
Knowledge of Australian Standards (AS/NZS) Familiarity with Hardox / Bisalloy / BlueScope grades Why Join APS?
