QIFVLS is a state-wide Community Legal Practice with office across 8 regions in Queensland. We are a not-for-profit organisation that provides free legal services, including court and tribunal representation, welfare support, advocacy and community education to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander victims of family violence and/or sexual assault. Currently we have a vacancy for a Family Advocate Support Worker in our Community Legal Services team for the Cairns Office.

Please note, that to perform this role, it is essential that the person who holds the position be an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person and is therefore a genuine occupational requirement under section 25, 104 and 105 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991 (Qld).

About the role

The Family Advocacy Support Worker is integral to the delivery of culturally appropriate supports within the legal service delivery team supporting legal and inter-related non-legal outcomes in the areas of law that QIFVLS practices in, whilst also being responsible for building the capacity to empower high needs and vulnerable people, and their communities to take control over their own lives.

The position uses a strength-based / trauma informed approach to build on individual, family, community and cultural strengths. This position is responsible for the co-ordination (and delivery) of Community Education (CE) programs, community outreach and holistic support services for QIFVLS in its delivery of QIFVLS legal services across its regions.

Responsibilities

Administration Functions:

Assist legal staff in providing a legal service that is culturally sensitive and responsive to the needs of clients.

Provide families with information about the court systems that they are engaging with.

Facilitate positive engagement between families and organisations.

Liaise with clients and the Solicitor in the provision of casework support, legal documentation and referrals, as required.

Complete and arrange file management duties in support of legal staff to enable them to focus on delivering legal services.

Ensure that relevant records and files are maintained to a high standard and that client confidentiality is maintained at all times.

Ensure the legal file register is contemporaneous and maintained in a state of readiness that reflects timely, efficient and effective teamwork and service delivery.

Network and liaise with relevant community organisations, individuals, men's and women's groups, legal service providers, government departments, community justice groups and other relevant organisations enabling QIFVLS to promote and target service delivery, effectively and appropriately.

Maintain the Stakeholder Directory, Stakeholder Management Plans, and community Profile Booklet with up to date service provider details and information.

Lead, participate and assist in the facilitation of community education sessions to be conducted in communities;

Develop culturally appropriate methods and tools in order to facilitate and deliver community education as required.

Organise and present community education sessions using approved materials and presentations.

Provide preliminary telephone assistance to clients (information not advice), including information about our service and referrals to other agencies as required.

Represent QIFVLS within the community as directed by attending and presenting at meetings, functions and forums in a manner consistent with QIFVLS' role and objectives and its code of conduct.

Ensure accurate details are entered in the diary management system (Outlook) and the file register is maintained with up to date information.

Extensive regular travel to deliver outreach services to remote communities

Ensure statistical data and relevant information is entered into the legal database system in accordance with the relevant procedures.

Ensure established targets and standards are met as determined.

Perform duties as per the Task list.

Perform other reasonable duties which might be determined by the Executive Director (Legal), the Director of Legal Practice or the Chief Executive Officer.

Legal Case Management Functions

Attending courts and assisting the solicitor in obtaining detailed instructions, both oral and written from clients, as directed by the solicitor.

Providing court support to the client to assist effective legal service delivery.

Maintain minimum legal case management Standards in accordance with QIFVLS Legal Case Management Guidelines.

Assist and support clients to make informed decisions by acting as their advocate regarding their Case Management Plans.

Assist and support clients working towards achieving self-efficacy in the form of achieving legal case management goals.

Assisting and supporting clients in self-advocacy or representing their views when needed.

The creation and management of legal case management files for clients to be operated in accordance with QIFVLS Legal Case Management Guidelines.

Experience /Qualification/s Requirements

Relevant qualifications in legal or social studies (minimum of Certificate III level) or an equivalent and extensive relevant work experience. An ongoing willingness to participate in qualification pathways to fully support clients and community is essential.
