Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Forest Monitoring
Overview
Western Sydney University invites applications for a Full-Time, Fixed-Term Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Forest Monitoring based at the Hawkesbury Campus in Richmond, NSW. The role supports a project funded by the Australian Forest & Wood Innovation Centre for Climate-Smart Forestry, developing a prototype open-data platform to monitor forest structure, condition, and carbon stocks across Australia. The position involves working with ground-based and remotely-sensed datasets and contributing to a national roadmap for forest monitoring.
Responsibilities
- Support the development of the open-data platform and the national forest monitoring roadmap
- Identify and source relevant ground-based and remote-sensing datasets
- Collaborate with project partners and data owners to establish robust data management practices
- Aggregate, store, and integrate diverse datasets for case study areas
- Apply machine learning techniques to estimate forest baselines and trends
- Communicate findings through presentations, reports, and scientific publications
Qualifications & Experience
- PhD (or near completion) in environmental science, remote sensing, data science, or a related field
- Experience managing large spatial datasets and applying machine learning techniques
- Experience with open data principles and data management
- Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to present results to diverse audiences and contribute to scientific publications
- Excellent organisational skills and a collaborative mindset for cross-stakeholder delivery
Remuneration & Working Arrangements
Academic Level A $112,718 to $136,180 p.a. (comprising Salary of $95,248 to $115,074 p.a., plus Superannuation and Leave Loading).
Full-Time, Fixed-Term for 1.5 years, based at Hawkesbury Campus. Travel to other campuses may be required.
