Who are we? The Office of the Inspector-General of Intelligence and Security (IGIS) is central to the independent oversight of the Australian intelligence and security agencies. The Inspector General is an independent statutory office holder with oversight of the activities of Australia's intelligence and security agencies to ensure they act legally and with propriety, comply with ministerial guidelines and directives, and respect human rights. The work of the Inspector-General and his staff provides assurance to ministers, the parliament and the public that these agencies are using their powers as intended. We are a small portfolio agency, proud of our contribution to the national interest. With the passage of the Strengthening Oversight of the National Intelligence Community Act 2025, the jurisdiction of the IGIS will expand in 2026 to all ten agencies within the National Intelligence Community with the inclusion of all of the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission (ACIC); and the 'intelligence functions' of the Australian Transaction Report and Analysis Centre (AUSTRAC), the Australian Federal Police (AFP), and the Department of Home Affairs. The IGIS is expected to further grow in light of these additions, providing new and exciting opportunities for a motivated director to contribute to the implementation of the legislation, and build and steer teams through a pivotal period of growth and uplift, including building new and existing teams and supporting innovation. The key duties of the position include The Opportunity A Director Intelligence Oversight leads and manages the core work of IGIS - delivering efficient and effective oversight of the agencies within IGIS' jurisdiction, noting the expansion of the IGIS jurisdiction in 2026. The Director Intelligence Oversight leads the development and delivery of an annual oversight work program for one or more agencies in IGIS' jurisdiction. The Director Intelligence Oversight will establish and manage relationships with stakeholders across the agencies they are responsible for at a variety of levels and escalate issues in those relationships to IGIS' senior leadership as appropriate. The Director Intelligence Oversight demonstrates leadership and management of oversight officers to apply analytic and critical thinking skills to understand agency activities, identify potential issues, formulate an informed view, and identify and make findings and recommendations. The Director will lead the development of IGIS' public and ministerial level reporting on agency activities and contribute to the IGIS appearances before parliamentary committees. The Director will actively contribute to the leadership of the broader functions of IGIS as part of the IGIS leadership group to ensure it delivers effective oversight. Key responsibilities of the Director, Intelligence Oversight role: take a lead role in the delivery of the work within a section to meet current and future priorities, including reviewing the operational activities of the agencies within IGIS jurisdiction such as through inspections and inquiries under relevant legislation take a lead role in inquiry and investigations into other matters within IGIS jurisdiction steer the team through a pivotal period of growth and uplift with the IGIS expanded jurisdiction, refining and building on existing team processes, capacity and output make accurate judgments in a dynamic environment lead the development and delivery of oversight plans for one or more agencies lead, manage and mentor staff within a section interpret and apply legislation, and policies and procedures, in relation to agency activities lead by example and foster a culture of innovation and continuous improvement informed by sound evaluation methodologies where staff feel supported to grow, collaborate with purpose, and innovate with confidence providestrategic advice to the IGIS Executive and other line areas regarding agency specific matters asrequired contribute to the management of the Branch, and the strategic management of the IGIS Office develop and strengthen collaborative relationships with internal and external colleagues and stakeholders both domestic and international foster, shape, build and maintain productive, but independent, working relationships with colleagues in the agencies the IGIS oversees to further the work of the Office represent IGIS at meetings, interdepartmental committees, domestic and international conferences and other fora handle highly classified and sensitive information on a daily basis exercise professional discretion, demonstrate excellent judgement and appropriate consideration of risk and sensitivity of information. Essential skills and experience ability to lead, develop and mentor staff to deliver results including through periods of change highly developed and demonstrated strategic, analytical and critical thinking skills to tackle complex issues excellent written and verbal communication skills, including complex analysis and report writing ability to build and maintain relationships with a network of stakeholders in a responsive and flexible way in a highly sensitive workplace have a professional curiosity to both proactively examine issues and develop new ways of conducting business. Highly desirable skills and experience an understanding of, and/or experience in, the National Intelligence Community (NIC) or National Security Community (NSC) experience undertaking inspections, audits, compliance action, or other types of administrative reviews or analytical work leadership experience, including experience managing individuals or a small group of staff. The Office is a small portfolio agency within the Attorney-General's Department. In addition to your core duties, at times you may be asked to undertake tasks that are outside your usual span of duties but that are within the range of your capabilities.
