Communications Officer – Townsville

Contract until mid-August 2026 | Majority office-based | Local candidates only

Are you a strong communicator looking to develop your career within a major regional organisation? We are seeking an enthusiastic Communications Officer to support a busy Customer & Stakeholder Management team in Townsville.

This is an excellent opportunity for an emerging communications professional to work across meaningful infrastructure projects while building skills in stakeholder engagement, external communications, and structured communications processes.


About the Role

As the Communications Officer, you will help deliver clear, accurate and timely information to the community regarding low-risk infrastructure and maintenance projects across the Northern District. This contractor position is essential in supporting day-to-day communications activities, enabling senior advisors to focus on higher-priority and strategic work.

You will work closely with technical specialists, engineers, and project teams to translate complex information into accessible public-facing content. The role suits someone proactive, organised, and confident working independently in a busy regional office.


Key Responsibilities

You will contribute to a broad range of communication and engagement activities, including:


External Communications

* Drafting correspondence, flyers, social media posts, and web updates.
* Preparing project webpages, analytics reports and content updates.
* Developing content for internal information platforms.
* Producing stakeholder and road-user notices for maintenance and low-risk projects.
* Preparing basic media statements and compiling daily media clips.
* Managing communication responses for low-level stakeholder matters.


Stakeholder Engagement

* Supporting engagement activity for low-risk infrastructure projects.
* Responding to community enquiries via the public phone line.
* Sourcing stakeholder contact details and maintaining accurate records in spreadsheets and databases.
* Assisting with or attending stakeholder meetings alongside Engagement Officers.


Administration & Coordination

* Managing the correspondence tracker.
* Supporting routine coordination tasks within the Customer & Stakeholder Management team.


About You

* Strong written communication skills with the ability to turn technical information into clear, user-friendly content.
* The capacity to work independently and manage competing priorities.
* High attention to detail and confidence using templates and standard processes.
* Experience in government, infrastructure, engineering, or similar environments (highly regarded).
* A qualification in communications, journalism, public relations, or a related field—recent graduates encouraged to apply.
* Local availability within the Townsville region (required).
