The opportunity
As Principal Urban Planner, you'll lead the assessment of complex and high‐profile planning applications, ensuring decisions align with Council's strategic objectives, planning scheme and legislative framework. You'll provide trusted technical advice, represent Council in key forums such as VCAT, and work closely with applicants, the community and internal stakeholders to achieve high‐quality outcomes that balance growth, liveability and community benefit.
What You'll Be Doing
* Lead the assessment and determination of complex and major planning permit applications
* Provide expert statutory planning advice to Councillors, executives, staff and applicants
* Represent Council at VCAT, mediation and other planning forums
* Coordinate consultation and responses with internal and external referral authorities
* Mentor and support other planners, reviewing work and contributing to continuous improvement
What You'll Need To Succeed
* Tertiary qualification in statutory planning or a related discipline
* Extensive experience in statutory planning, ideally within Victorian local government
* Advanced knowledge of the Planning and Environment Act, Planning Scheme and VCAT processes
* Strong negotiation, communication and stakeholder engagement skills
* Proven ability to manage complex, sensitive and high‐profile planning matters

Pre-Employment Requirements
