Primary objective
To protect Aboriginal sacred sites by managing and assisting with investigation compliance and education activities, liaising with
custodians and stakeholders, and providing information in accordance with the Northern Territory Aboriginal Sacred Sites Act 1989
(NTASSA).

Context statement
The Aboriginal Areas Protection Authority is an independent statutory Authority established by the NTASSA, designed to effect a
practical balance between the recognised need to preserve and enhance Aboriginal cultural tradition in relation to certain land in
the Territory and the aspirations of Aboriginal and all other peoples of the Territory for their economic, cultural and social
advancement by providing advice on the protection of sacred sites in the context of development.

Key duties and responsibilities
1. Efficiently interpret and process applications for Authority Certificates including cost estimates; and Inspections of the Register

in accordance with the NTASSA.
2. Assist in maintaining the Public Register, including through database integrity audits, in accordance with the NTASSA.
3. Process requests to view the Authority’s records in accordance with the Request for Information procedure including Chief

Executive Officer Decision Memos, liaising with clients and supervising the review of material.
4. Assist in the provision of customised mapping as part of replies to Requests for Information or notices in accordance with the

NTASSA.
5. Be the first point of contact for all enquiries relating to the application process for: Authority Certificates, Sacred Site

Registration, Inspection of the Register, Site Damage communication and all general enquiries relating to applications and
Authority processes.

6. Operate flexibly as a member of the Client Services Unit, undertaking projects and tasks as directed and responding to internal
and public inquires.

7. Provide training and support to staff and external stakeholders in processes, procedures and systems use.

Selection criteria
Essential
1. Demonstrated experience or ability to provide information or source relevant advice as required to respond to client enquires.
2. Well-developed oral and written communication skills, including an ability to communicate complex issues to a wide range of

clients in a clear and understandable way.
3. Demonstrated computer skills and database skills in order to navigate through a range of web-based databases and mapping

environments.
4. Well-developed administrative and organisational skills in order to work autonomously, in an environment with competing

timeframes and changing priorities.
5. Ability to relate to Aboriginal custodians with sensitivity and an understanding of their culture.

Desirable
1. Experience in the use of Google Earth or similar products or the ability to quickly attain skills.
2. Knowledge of the Northern Territory Aboriginal political context in which the NTASSA operates
