Primary objective
As a member of the College administration team and under the direction of the Senior Manager, Operations, the
Maintenance and Grounds Officer plays a key role in maintaining a high standard of presentation, safety, and functionality
of the College’s physical environment. This includes performing and overseeing a broad range of grounds and building
maintenance, coordinating contractors, and applying trade-level or equivalent skills to ensure efficient upkeep of the
College’s infrastructure.
Context statement
Casuarina Senior College is an Independent Public School located in Darwin’s northern suburbs with approximately 650
students, including 25% identifying as Aboriginal. The College caters for students in Years 10 to 12 and offers a wide range
of Stage 1 and 2 NTCET subjects, with a focus on Medical and Health Sciences and STEM disciplines.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Perform and oversee a broad range of grounds and maintenance tasks, including minor trade-related repairs, grounds
upkeep, and use of powered equipment.
2. Coordinate and supervise contractors or casual staff as required, ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently, and to
quality standards.
3. Identify and address safety risks; report and act on urgent maintenance issues in line with WHS requirements.
4. Maintain and troubleshoot irrigation systems, garden infrastructure, and operational equipment, ensuring proper storage
and servicing.
5. Assist with event setup, furniture relocation, and transporting students (where qualified), supporting operational needs
of the College.
6. Work independently, interpret simple plans or diagrams, apply quality control, and communicate effectively with staff
and contractors.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Trade qualifications or substantial relevant experience in facilities or grounds maintenance, with the ability to complete
tasks to a high standard with minimal supervision.
2. Proven experience operating and maintaining grounds equipment (e.g. ride-on mowers, whipper snippers, pressure
washers) and basic irrigation systems.
3. Ability to work alongside maintenance staff or contractors, prioritise tasks, apply quality standards, and interpret work
plans or simple technical diagrams.
4. Sound knowledge of safe work practices and WHS procedures in a facilities or school setting.
5. Strong interpersonal, organisational, and communication skills with the ability to work both independently and as part of
a team.
6. Proficient use of digital tools such as Microsoft Outlook and Compass for scheduling and communication.
Desirable
1. Current NT C Class and Light Rigid driver’s licence with manual vehicle experience.
