The Paper is seeking an experienced news editor to oversee its online news operation on a part‑time basis. Based in Sydney, you will be responsible for providing coverage and editing the homepage overnight in GMT, ensuring our best journalism is presented and promoted in the most impactful way.
The ideal candidate will be comfortable with writing breaking news, explainers or analysis as required, and also desking commissions from reporters around the globe.
This role is at the heart of The Paper’s busy news operation and requires a supreme multi‑tasker with impeccable news judgement, an eye for detail and a cool head. You will be tasked with editing the homepage overnight in GMT, ensuring our best journalism is presented and promoted in the most impactful way. This role is for three days a week: Friday to Sunday.
The overnight weekend news editor will ensure major new stories of UK and international interest are followed up and the most recent lines added. You will be well‑versed in analytics and digital tools and will utilise these skills when making decisions on content commissioning and publishing overnight pieces.
A valuable understanding of media law and the UK Editors’ Code of Conduct (IPSO) is required for this role, particularly due to the nature of this shift. The weekend shifts would ideally run until 8am GMT where it would then be handed over to a homepage and news editor.
This role is the perfect opportunity for someone who thrives under pressure, has sound judgement and is looking to take on a high degree of responsibility in managing The Paper’s online news content.
Job specifications
- To take sole charge of online news content overnight GMT at the weekend, taking responsibility for breaking news, explainers, and keeping The Paper’s content fresh and engaging.
- Updating articles where necessary and commissioning content on analysis for Britain’s morning readers.
- Ensuring all content for print and online publication has been legalled and falls within IPSO’s code of conduct.
- Providing a thorough handover to The Paper’s Weekend News Editor on rolling stories including suggestions for moving stories on, angles to chase or breakouts that differentiate our coverage from other media outlets.
Skills and experience
- Strong news sense and judgement plus confidence in moving stories along.
- Experience in leading from the front in a busy and demanding newsroom and editing for an online news media organisation.
- Strong headline writing, copy editing and writing skills are a must.
- Well‑versed and passionate about the news agenda within the UK and abroad.
- Good knowledge of media law and the Editors’ Code of Practice.
- Understanding of SEO and how to use social media to promote stories is key.
- Excellent people‑management skills, and a proven ability to get the best out of experienced journalists.
- Ability to give direction, advice, and feedback to reporter.
