The Role
As an EL 1 Program Manager within the ALSPO Project Management Unit, you will be responsible for managing a multidisciplinary team under the strategic direction of the Project Director. You will provide leadership, guidance, and expert advice to support the successful delivery of complex project outcomes aligned with Defence objectives.
You will demonstrate a strong understanding of relevant legislative frameworks, government processes, and Defence policy, ensuring compliance and strategic alignment throughout the project lifecycle. A key part of your responsibilities will include contributing to project controls - such as performance reporting, budget forecasting, schedule management, and risk mitigation - to ensure transparency and accountability.
Your experience and knowledge in the project management space will directly support the Royal Australian Air Force in delivering successful transition of the new C-130J-30 aircraft into sustainment and disposal of the legacy C-130J-30 fleet.
As an Executive Level 1 (EL1) Australian Public Servant (APS) for the Department of Defence your key accountabilities are:
* Produce quality business preparedness planning documents, including: workforce and transition planning, infrastructure planning, change planning, fleet planning and disposal or aircraft re-use strategies.
* Research, draft and prepare briefs, complex correspondence and reports including submissions for committee consideration.
* Working collaboratively leveraging the experience and knowledge of peers to deliver superior solutions and identification risk and issues.
* Engage with relevant stakeholders and understand their expectations and concerns.
* Assess and adjust project management methodologies to comply with legislative, policy and regulatory frameworks.
* Resolve problems using professional expertise, taking the initiative to identify alternative courses of action.
* Will also contribute to the broader Medium Air Lift Strategic Plan for Air Force
This position requires a Negative Vetting 1 (NV1) security clearance and the successful applicant must be eligible to access export-controlled technology and data subject to the US International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR). This is a condition of employment.

Air Lift Systems Program Office (ALSPO) has an exciting opportunity for an experienced Program Manager to support Medium Air Lift Capability for Air Force. The Transition & Retirement Manager is an important role that defines, develops and delivers transition outcomes for the C-130J-30 Hercules and the platform support systems.
The Project Management Unit within ALSPO is a highly capable and professional team operating in a dynamic and challenging work environment supporting Defence capability. Given the integrated nature of our business, building and maintaining cooperative and collaborative relationships are fundamental to our success. This role will be required to develop and lead a team based at RAAF Richmond, interstate travel may be required on occasion.
