**The Role**
The Closing the Gap team leads on the Department of Education's engagement with the National Agreement on Closing the Gap. The Team is responsible for driving the strategic delivery of the department's responsibilities under the Agreement, with a particular focus on embedding the Priority Reforms into the department's ways of working. The team works closely with line areas within the department - across early childhood, schools, higher education, and youth - as well as with external stakeholders to progress this work.
The focus of the role will include:
- embedding the National Agreement on Closing the Gap's Priority Reform 4 in the department's ways of working
- leading the establishment of robust data governance in the department
- building staff data capability to approach First Nations data in a culturally responsive way, focusing on strengths-based messaging.
- Leading and developing a culture of effective coordination and collaboration across the department and as part of whole of government mechanisms on Priority Reform 4 and on First Nations data initiatives.
- You will need to demonstrate your understanding of the issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and an ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people._
**Duties and Responsibilities**
Responsibilities of the EL1 Assistant Director may include:
- Maintaining a well-developed understanding of relevant policies, frameworks, and research, with a particular focus on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander education and Closing the Gap.
- Leading initiatives to build organisational capability to manage and use data effectively.
- Engaging and collaborating with key internal and external stakeholders to identify opportunities, achieve outcomes and facilitate cooperation.
- Providing strategic advice to the Senior Executive to deliver Departmental and Government data initiatives such as the Framework for the Governance of Indigenous Data
- Undertake more complex research for the purpose of establishing data management practices and data initiatives in the department.
- Prepare and review a range of reports that present data and evidence in a way that is accessible for our key stakeholders.
- Prepare and review draft policy reports, briefing papers, and discussion papers for presentation to senior staff and the Senior Executive.
- Managing a number of employees in a collaborative team environment based on development, knowledge sharing, effective communication and support
