South Bunbury Education Support Centre (ESC) is a specialist setting that caters to the needs of students with diagnoses of high‐need Autism Spectrum Disorder or Intellectual Disability. With approximately 70 students, the school offers individual support and attention in all areas of student development.
The Role
As a Special Needs Education Assistant, you will assist in the implementation of specialised education programmes such as occupational therapy, speech therapy and other therapies under teacher direction. You will help deliver planned education programmes, including operating computers and digital technologies, and implement individual, small‐group programmes or demonstrations. You will provide feedback on education and therapy programmes and participate in the evaluation of special‐education goal achievement. The role requires resilience in the face of frequent unpredictability, as students have varied needs.
* Assist in the delivery of specialised education programmes such as occupational therapy, speech therapy, and other therapies.
* Support teachers in implementing planned education programmes, including the operation of computers and digital technologies.
* Implement individual and small‐group programmes or demonstrations.
* Provide feedback on education and therapy programmes and participate in evaluation of goal achievement.
* Cope well with frequent unpredictability in student needs.
Qualifications & Knowledge
Applicants should have professional knowledge and expertise in our current whole‐school approaches. Knowledge of the following programmes will be highly regarded:
* TEACCH (Treatment and Education of Autistic and related Communication‐handicapped Children)
* Alternative and Augmentative Communication
* Team Teach
* Trauma‐Informed Practice
* Promoting Literacy Development (PLD)
Eligibility
* Be an Australian or New Zealand citizen, permanent resident, or have a valid visa with relevant work rights for the term of the appointment.
* Obtain a valid Working With Children Check before you start.
* Consent to a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check and obtain a current Screening Clearance Number issued by the Department of Education's Screening Unit before you start.
