PARAEDUCATOR – FUNCTIONAL CORE PROGRAM – WORKING 1:1 WITH A STUDENT

The Functional Core Program (FCP) serves students with identified disabilities who require primary learning support in functional life skills. The paraeducator works under the direction of a certificated teacher, assisting students with learning and healthcare needs such as feeding, tube feeding, toileting, catheterization, lifting, and behavior management.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

* Assist students in meeting IEP goals/objectives and maintain accurate records.
* Prepare classroom and materials as directed.
* Keep facilities clean and safe.
* Assist students with washing, diapering, toileting, and personal hygiene.
* Perform medical procedures as determined by a registered nurse, including medication administration, catheterization, suctioning, and tube feeding.
* Elevate and position medically fragile students safely.
* Work with students who have behavior problems, following behavior plans and, if necessary, implementing safe restraints.
* Supervise or assist students during lunch, recess, adaptive PE, music, library, and possibly in general education settings or community activities.
* Assist students on and off the bus.
* Build positive rapport with students and staff.
* Communicate any concerns from parents or support staff to the immediate supervisor.
* Demonstrate effective safety and security within individual work routines.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES

* Perform instructional clerical tasks.
* Collaborate with district staff and foster teamwork.
* Provide helpful information to substitute teachers.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

* High School Diploma or Equivalent.
* One of the following:
o Associate's Degree.
o High school diploma (or equivalent) and 48 college-level semester credits or 72 college-level quarter credits.
o High school diploma (or equivalent) and pass the state‐approved paraeducator assessment test.
* Proficient in basic spelling, math, and grammar.
* Experience and/or training in reading instruction, remediation, and assessment.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

* Experience and knowledge of working with students with special health care needs and developmental disabilities.

CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT

* Pass a criminal background check.
* Pass fitness for duty examination.
* Hold a Washington State driver's license and a Type II driver's license.
* Complete district paraeducator core competency requirements.
* Maintain a certificates in Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS), advanced Right Response training, and CPR/first aid from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
* Travel with students as needed.
* Work scheduled hours on a consistent basis.

KNOWLEDGE OF

* Individual Education Plans (IEPs).
* English grammar and spelling.
* Basic math.
* Positive behavior interventions.
* Right Response and de‐escalation techniques.
* School board policies.

* Exercise sound judgment in independent action versus referral to higher authority.
* Maintain professional ethics, confidentiality, and high standards of conduct.
* Engage respectfully with a multicultural, multiracial community.
* Continue professional growth and adapt to evolving needs.
* Perform the essential duties with or without reasonable accommodations.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES RELATED TO CULTURAL COMPETENCE AND EQUITY

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

* Constant sitting, standing, walking, bending, grasping, pushing/pulling, kneeling, squatting, and fine manipulation.
* Occasional climbing stairs or ladders.
* Frequent lifting and carrying up to 25 lbs, occasional lifting up to 50 lbs with assistance or mechanical device required.
* Occasional push/pull of up to 200 lbs.

WORK CONDITIONS

* Indoor and outdoor conditions, moderate noise levels.
* Exposure to angry, frustrated, or aggressive individuals in classroom settings.
* Potential exposure to infectious diseases.

WORK SCHEDULE

This is a school year assignment. Hours and days may vary slightly between schools.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

Reports to the classroom teacher, department head, and building principal. Evaluated by the building principal or designee.

LEVEL OF COMPENSATION

Paraeducator position on the PSE Salary Schedule. Benefits prorated based on FTE – medical, dental, vision, sick and vacation leave, life insurance, retirement.
