Job Description

Join the team redefining how the world experiences design. We blend creativity with engineering to create products that millions use daily.

Where and How You Can Work

Our flagship campus is in Sydney, with another in Melbourne and co‑working spaces in Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide. You’ll choose where and how you work, balancing flexibility and collaboration to empower your team.

What You’d Be Doing In This Role

As Canva scales, change is constant. You’ll help shape the type of projects you’ll work on, with expectancies evolving as recent challenges arise.

At The Moment, This Role Is Focused On

- Lead complex transformation initiatives: Own and drive high‑impact, multi‑system automation projects from discovery through production, coordinating with business partners to deliver critical solutions.
- Architect scalable solutions: Design maintainable system architectures that balance immediate needs with long‑term scalability, guiding the team toward sustainable approaches.
- Build advanced platform capabilities: Create sophisticated frameworks, libraries and tools that enable other engineers to move faster and solve classes of problems rather than single instances.
- Pioneer AI integration patterns: Lead the way in applying AI technologies to business automation, experimenting with cutting‑edge approaches and establishing reusable patterns.
- Write production‑grade code: Author code that exemplifies engineering excellence, setting the standard for quality, testing, documentation and operational readiness.
- Provide technical leadership: Conduct design reviews, provide architectural guidance and help engineers solve complex technical challenges.
- Mentor and develop others: Coach less experienced engineers through pairing, code reviews and technical discussions, identifying skill gaps and creating learning opportunities.
- Consult with business partners: Work directly with multiple stakeholders to understand strategic initiatives, identify automation opportunities and translate business needs into technical solutions.
- Establish engineering standards: Define and document best practices for intelligent automation, creating processes that ensure quality and consistency at scale.
- Drive operational excellence: Implement comprehensive monitoring and alerting, lead incident response for critical issues and conduct blameless post‑mortems.
- Shape team direction: Contribute to roadmap planning, technical strategy and prioritize work based on business impact.
- Contribute to recruiting: Conduct technical interviews, train interviewers and help attract exceptional talent to the team.

You're Probably a Match if You Have

Technical Leadership

- Deep software engineering expertise: Strong computer science fundamentals with a track record of designing and delivering scalable systems.
- Expert‑level coding proficiency: Extensive experience building services, tools and automation, especially in Python. Node.js experience is a bonus.
- Cloud platform mastery: Deep experience with AWS or GCP, architecting secure, scalable, cloud‑native solutions.
- System integration expertise: Proven ability to integrate complex systems, design APIs and handle data transformations across platforms.
- Platform engineering experience: Background building internal platforms or developer tools, creating abstractions that enable others.

AI and Automation Excellence

- Advanced AI technology usage: Extensive hands‑on experience integrating language models and other AI tools into applications.
- Automation platform expertise: Experience with workflow automation platforms (n8n, Workato, CrewAI, etc.) or a demonstrated ability to become an expert quickly.
- Strategic automation thinking: Design platform‑level solutions that unlock entire classes of automation, not just individual fixes.

Leadership and Impact

- Independent operator: Proven track record of leading initiatives with minimal guidance, proactively identifying high‑impact opportunities.
- Technical leadership across teams: Coordinating work across multiple teams, aligning diverse stakeholders and navigating complex organizational dynamics.
- Technical mentorship: Coaching and developing other engineers, conducting effective design reviews and helping others level up.
- Stakeholder management: Strong executive presence, comfortable presenting to business stakeholders and translating between technical and non‑technical domains.
- Strategic thinking: Connecting short‑term deliverables to long‑term platform vision and prioritizing based on business impact.

Working Style

- Adaptable and versatile: Thriving in ambiguous, rapidly changing environments and context‑switching across technologies.
- Pragmatic problem solver: Balancing quality, speed and business value, knowing when to build, buy or script.
- Collaborative influencer: Building relationships across boundaries and influencing through expertise rather than authority.
- Operational ownership: Full accountability for production systems, observability, incident response and continuous improvement.
- Culture builder: Modeling engineering excellence and establishing practices that scale with the team.

About The Team

The Technology Experience group is one of Canva’s internal platform organisations, responsible for making everyone at Canva more productive and effective. Within this group, teams transform business operations through automation and/or AI‑powered workflows.

We partner closely with non‑engineering orgs like GTM, Finance, Marketing, Sales, Legal and People, reimaging what’s possible with modern automation technology. As a senior engineer, you’ll be a technical leader, pioneer, mentor and influenceer, shaping a new capability at Canva.

What’s In It For You?

- Equity packages – you share in Canva’s success.
- Inclusive parental leave policy that supports all parents & carers.
- An annual Vibe & Thrive allowance supporting wellbeing, social connection, office setup and more.
- Flexible leave options to recharge and support you personally.

We celebrate all types of skills and backgrounds. Even if your skills don’t match every listed requirement, we want to hear from you.

We make hiring decisions based on your experience, skills, passion and how you can enhance Canva and our culture. When you apply, please tell us the pronouns you use and any reasonable adjustments you may need during the interview process.
