The role of Metallurgical Engineer in Supply Chain involves leading cutting-edge material development at mills for proprietary materials.

This position requires practical experience in process engineering and new product development through to stabilized production for machined components and assemblies used in rockets and rocket engines.

Key responsibilities include enforcing strict requirements at mills worldwide to ensure aerospace-grade materials are received for the Starship program, acting as a metallurgical point of contact for all purchased metallic raw materials and semi-finished products, and leading technical quality issue and non-conformance resolution.

A key aspect of this role is working with procurement to source exceptional suppliers and qualify them appropriately for quality and ability to meet aggressive takt times. Additionally, developing and approving process controls to control critical characteristics, conducting design for manufacturing reviews, and owning the new product introduction process at suppliers are crucial tasks.

This position also involves recommending technical product improvements to reduce risks to quality and delivery, reviewing and assessing supplier manufacturing processes and quality systems, and providing feedback on manufacturing methods and technologies.

Required qualifications include a Bachelor's degree in an engineering or materials discipline and 1+ years of experience with manufacturing, materials, or process engineering. Preferred skills and experience include a Master's degree in metallurgical engineering or materials science & engineering, 2+ years of experience with TIG, MIG, and resistance welding of stainless steel, and familiarity with metallic mill products in alloys and product forms used on launch vehicles and engines.
