About the RoleThis organisation is seeking a Principal Legal Officer with Family Law experience to provide strategic, cultural and operational leadership of its legal practice.
Based in Toowoomba this role has oversight of multiple regional service locations and works closely with the Chief Executive Officer and Executive Leadership Team. The Principal Legal Officer is responsible for high‑quality legal service delivery, governance and compliance, legal risk management, and the supervision and development of legal staff.This is a senior leadership opportunity for an experienced practitioner committed to culturally safe practice and justice‑focused service delivery.
Key ResponsibilitiesLead and manage the legal practice across multiple regional officesEnsure the delivery of high‑quality legal services in family law, domestic violence and child protectionSupervise, mentor and support solicitors and legal staffMaintain compliance with professional, regulatory and funding requirementsOversee legal risk management, file review and quality assurance processesContribute to organisational governance, policy development and reportingProvide strategic legal advice to the executive leadership teamSupport law reform, advocacy and sector engagement activitiesMaintain a limited caseload of complex or sensitive matters as requiredTravel to regional locations to support service delivery and staff
About YouYou are a senior legal practitioner and people leader with strong experience in social justice or community‑based legal practice. You bring a collaborative leadership style, high professional standards and a demonstrated commitment to culturally appropriate service delivery.
Essential CriteriaEligibility for an unrestricted Queensland practising certificateMinimum 5 years post‑admission experienceSubstantial experience in family law, child protection and domestic violence, including defended mattersProven experience supervising and mentoring legal staffStrong communication skills, including working with clients where English may not be a first languageDemonstrated experience working respectfully with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communitiesExperience in legal governance, compliance and risk managementHigh attention to detail and strong IT skillsWillingness to occasionally travel within regional QueenslandAbility to obtain relevant clearances and hold a current driver licence
