Animal Management Officer
Enforce animal management laws, respond to public safety incidents, educate the community, and ensure best-practice compliance to support a safe and responsible animal-friendly city.

We have an exciting opportunity for two permanent full time Animal Management Officers to join the City Safety and Liveability Branch within the Council.
It is an exciting time to be joining the team as we mark the completion of our $21 million redevelopment of the Queens Road facility which includes a new, state of the art Animal Management Centre and animal holding facilities. The team you will be joining is a diverse, critical part of the branch, responsible for investigating animal keeping compliance issues in our city and improving public safety in accordance with Council's Animal Management Plan 2023. Position responsibilities include:
* Investigate breaches of animal management laws, including wandering animals, nuisances, and registration issues.
* Respond to urgent public safety incidents such as animal attacks and wandering livestock.
* Capture, contain and impound animals safely and humanely.
* Gather evidence, interview witnesses, and prepare compliance documentation.
* Manage frightened, injured, or aggressive animals with confidence and care.
* Manage conflict and highly emotive situations professionally.
* Perform after-hours emergency responses on a rostered basis.
* Maintain accurate records, issue notices, and support warrant applications.
* Provide high-quality customer service and educate the community on responsible pet ownership.
* Work collaboratively within a team, mentor new staff and contribute to continuous improvement.
* Follow all workplace health, safety, and wellbeing procedures.
Key indicators for success:
* Strong knowledge of animal husbandry, animal behaviour, disease prevention, and animal management legislation.
* Experience managing a wide range of domestic animals and livestock, including anxious or aggressive animals.
* Skilled in inspections, investigations, evidence collection and applying relevant laws and policies.
* Excellent communication, conflict resolution, and report-writing skills.
* Able to work independently, manage workload and maintain professionalism in emotive situations.
* Competent with (or able to learn) Council systems and mobile technology.
* Flexible, adaptable, team-focused and committed to learning and continuous improvement.
* Strong understanding of WHS, risk management and sound decision-making.
* Ability to pass all pre-employment checks as required (physical assessment, vaccinations, psychometric testing and more).
