About The Role
This role leads the delivery of high‑quality planning and building compliance services by providing expert advice on complex policy matters, applications, and enforcement activities. It supports the implementation and review of planning and building policies, procedures, and work practices to ensure legislative compliance while maintaining a strong customer focus. The position works closely with state government, industry, and community stakeholders to implement changes in legislation and policy across the city.
The role coordinates and leads the Planning and Building Compliance Team, monitoring performance, driving continuous improvement, and ensuring consistent and accurate service delivery. It takes a proactive approach to compliance across the city, manages external contractors, prepares reports for Council and committees, and represents Council in legal proceedings when required. The position also supports business continuity during unplanned events and undertakes other duties as reasonably directed.
About You
* Bachelor’s degree in Town Planning, Law, or a related discipline, or demonstrated experience in planning and building compliance investigations.
* Certificate IV in Compliance, Investigations, or a legal discipline (desirable).
* Minimum of five years’ experience in planning and building compliance.
* Proven ability to interpret and apply the Planning Act, Planning Scheme, and related planning legislation.
* Proven ability to interpret and apply the Building Act and associated regulations.
* Sound knowledge of Planning and Environment Court processes, particularly enforcement proceedings.
* Working knowledge of the Local Government Act and related Commonwealth and State legislation.
* Demonstrated experience leading high‑performing teams, including resource allocation and operational delivery.
* Ability to build team capability through performance management, mentoring, and training.
* Strong stakeholder relationship management and customer engagement skills.
* Excellent communication, negotiation, consultation, and conflict‑resolution skills.
* Experience reviewing complex and high‑risk investigations and making evidence‑based decisions.
* Current unrestricted “C” Class driver licence.
