**The Role**
The Principal Field Research Safety Advisor will initially work within the pilot DSTG Trial Authority team, to develop strategies and system elements targeted at improving safety for all DSTG Research Field Trials. This role based in Edinburgh South Australia, will be an enduring part of the revised DSTG WHS Enabling Operations Model supporting complex trials. This will include overseeing the WHS Systems elements designed to ensure safety and compliance, training, investigation, governance, assurance and continuous improvement, for processes designed to ensure safety in the planning, coordination and delivery of Trials. This role will also lead and mentor other DSTG safety professionals to ensure there is consistent guidance and support for conducting Research Field Trials.
The nature of work associated with Research Field Trials is diverse, with different work environments that the Trial Authority team may visit.
These include:
- Local and remote defence ranges or DSTG managed trial sites;
- Academic campuses;
- Industry and other defence partners.
The general based workplace environment includes:
- Open plan office;
- Computer use and sitting at desks.

The DSTG Trial Authority and DSTG Research Safety Teams (Edinburgh and Fishermans Bend) work collaboratively with SMEs across all domains to provide support and advice on highly complex safety challenges. Both teams are an enthusiastic and motivated group of professionals who value working together, engaging across a number of complex hazards that will challenge your thinking and encourage you to be innovative and decisive to enable the safe delivery of outcomes on Research Field Trials.
- Demonstrate an ability to build and sustain relationships with a network of key people internally and externally;
- Have tertiary WHS qualifications, ideally with experience working within remote and isolated working environments;
- Ability to deliver strategies to reduce the risks associated with complex field trials, including First Aid and Emergency planning;
- An understanding of Safety Risk Management principles, and be able to provide leadership to assist in the development and implementation of control strategies;
- Experience in building teams, mentoring and working collaboratively with a board range of professionals within a complex and often demanding workplace;
- Qualifications and experience to assess and support specialist areas for safety, including minor construction, working at heights, operation of plant and equipment including high risk plant;
- Experience and ability to work as part of a logistics team, supporting complex planning; and project deadlines;
- Experience with any of the following principal hazards in a field environment would be well regarded combined with a willingness to learn broad safety requirements across these thematic areas:
- Radiation,
- Hazardous chemicals,
- Biological,
- Explosives,
- Range and Weapon Safety, and
- Maritime Safety.
