Primary objective
The role will work in collaboration with the Safety and Quality to monitor compliance and drive quality improvements for the NSQHS
partnering with consumers and communicating for safety standards. You will work in collaboration with Menzies School of Health
Research, the Aboriginal Interpreter Service and key stakeholders to ensure there is effective communication between Aboriginal patients,
their carers and families, multi-disciplinary teams and clinicians across Gove District Hospital, to support coordinated and safe care for
Aboriginal patients. The role will facilitate training in cultural safety for health care providers at Gove District Hospital and will work with
the Menzies research team in the collection of quantitative data and patient experiences.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Implement and advocate for the Communicate Study activities in partnership with the multidisciplinary teams at GDH.
2. Develop and maintain effective partnerships with AIS and stakeholders to provide an effective interpreter service.
1. Monitor compliance and drive quality improvements for the NSQHS Partnering with Consumers and Communicating for Safety
Standards.
4. Ensure accurate records are maintained for departmental purposes and research through relevant data collection, monthly reports
and appropriate record keeping.
5. In conjunction with the research team, conduct service information sessions for multi-disciplinary teams, promote cultural safety
initiatives.
6. Facilitate qualitative interview data collection with Aboriginal patients, as well as collection of quantitative data on interpreter uptake,
self-discharge and health outcomes. Ensure data collection and storage in accordance with ethical and cultural guidelines
7. Participate in unit and research group meetings, business planning, staff essential training and quality improvement activities and
meeting with the Communicate Study Project Manager on a regular basis

order to ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces.

Selection criteria
Essential
1. Demonstrated knowledge of the social and cross-cultural issues affecting delivery of health services to Aboriginal people in the East
Arnhem Health Service and the ability to interact effectively with people from diverse cultures.
2. Experience in training and presenting to multidisciplinary audiences; have a high level of written communication and reporting skills.
3. Knowledge of continuous quality improvement strategies.
4. Demonstrated working knowledge of the benefits and improvements to the health literacy of Aboriginal patients, families, carers and
to their health outcomes, of critical medical information and advice communicated in their own language.
5. Ability to empower and engage people, drive and influence change, and lead by example
6. High level organisational and time management skills, computer systems and database proficiency.
Desirable
1. Knowledge of remote communities in the Northern Territory and of main Aboriginal languages.

1. Current registration with Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia or eligible for same.
2. Demonstrated well-developed knowledge, skills and experience in a relevant area of nursing/midwifery relating to this vacancy with
depth in some areas and a broad range of skills.
3. Demonstrated ability to act as a clinical resource person and role model, including mentoring and preceptoring less experienced staff
and students.
4. Demonstrated contribution to the development and implementation of local activities beyond direct client care e.g. clinical education,
assist in management, research/quality assurance activities.
5. Demonstrated effective communication skills to achieve positive outcomes, including maintaining productive multi-disciplinary
working relationships, effectively dealing with challenging behaviours, and resolving conflicts.
6. Demonstrated well-developed knowledge and understanding of the social and cultural issues, influences and sensitivities that
influence health care provision for clients and families.

1. Graduate Certificate beyond entry-to-practice in relevant specialty area.
