Geelong canine fitness is a dedicated small animal rehabilitation centre offering compassionate, evidence-based care to dogs of all ages and abilities. We combine veterinary medicine, physiotherapy and hydrotherapy to improve quality of life and aid recovery. We're looking for a motivated Canine Hydrotherapist to join our friendly team and help deliver excellent, personalised hydrotherapy programmes.
Role summary
As a Canine Hydrotherapist you will plan and deliver hydrotherapy sessions for dogs with a variety of needs—post-operative rehabilitation, chronic orthopaedic conditions (e.g., arthritis), neurological conditions, weight management, fitness and performance conditioning. You will assess canine clients, create tailored treatment plans, monitor progress, and liaise with owners and veterinary staff to ensure coordinated care.
Key responsibilities
* Conduct initial assessments and re-assessments of canine patients, including gait and mobility evaluation.
* Develop and implement individual hydrotherapy programmes (underwater treadmill and/or swimming pool) aligned with veterinary or physiotherapy recommendations.
* Safely operate hydrotherapy equipment, maintain pool/treadmill hygiene and chemical balance, and ensure all safety protocols are followed.
* Provide clear instruction and education to owners on home exercises, handling techniques and progress expectations.
* Accurately record treatment notes, progress reports and any incidents; communicate with referring vets and team members as needed.
* Assist with scheduling, client intake and answering basic clinical inquiries related to hydrotherapy.
* Participate in continuing professional development and keep up to date with best practice and safety standards.
Required qualifications and experience
* Formal training or certification in canine hydrotherapy, animal physiotherapy, canine rehabilitation, or equivalent (e.g., certification from an accredited hydrotherapy body). Proof of completed course required.
* Experience working with dogs in a clinical or therapeutic environment (minimum X years preferred for experienced role; for entry-level, relevant placement experience accepted).
* Minimum 6 months of experience working with dogs in a clinical or therapeutic environment is required.
* Comfortable and competent with handling dogs of different sizes, temperaments and medical conditions.
* Strong communication skills, both verbal and written; able to explain treatment plans to owners clearly.
* Basic animal first aid knowledge; or willingness to obtain formal pet first aid/CPR certification.
* Ability to perform physically demanding tasks (lifting, assisting dogs into pool/treadmill, standing for long periods).
* Valid Australian work rights are required for this position.
Desirable
* Background in veterinary nursing, physiotherapy, canine fitness or similar allied health field.
* Experience with underwater treadmill and pool maintenance (chemical dosing, filtration systems).
* Member of recognised professional body for canine rehab/hydrotherapy.
