The Role

The Senior Communications Adviser - Graphic Designer (CS3A) is a member of the Stakeholder Engagement Division (SED) and Communications Branch which is responsible for CASA’s communication activities including broad public and industry consultation and communication strategies, media engagement, website and intranet management, social media channels, safety promotion activities, graphic design, video production, sponsorships and event management, and development of large scale documents such as Plain English Guides and Corporate Plan and Annual reports.

This position undertakes work that is complex in nature and works with independence subject to limited direction against CASA's established priorities, practices, and methodologies, to deliver quality outcomes aligned to CASA's strategic operational priorities and work plans. This includes contributing to the section and branch through visual communication and providing expert advice regarding innovative approaches to graphic design, user experience design, and print management.

The Senior Communications Adviser - Graphic Designer ensures that marketing and communications materials meet the requirements of the Australian Government and CASA visual style guide and is consistent with the visual component of the CASA brand. The role will provide expert and timely creative advice to ensure high design standards in the production of a large variety of print and digital safety promotion products, encouraging them to be used and valued by the aviation industry. The position engages with various business areas and external stakeholders to deliver effective, targeted messages, manage and maintain the high quality and professionalism of our visual branding, and provides creative or design advice or assistance.

This position may be required to work reasonable additional hours beyond the ordinary hours of work, including work on weekends or outside the span of hours. However, this is regarded as the exception and where additional hours are agreed and worked, the employee records those hours within timesheets and in accordance with CASA’s Enterprise Agreement.

The Senior Communications Adviser - Graphic Designer is responsible for the following deliverables, which represent an ongoing body of work:

* Contributing to the development of team objectives including short term tasks and strategic operational planning for longer-term initiatives. Exercising sound judgement and making administrative/operational decisions based on expertise and knowledge, under limited guidance. Making decisions that consider relevant regulations, CASA’s operating procedures, and the application of best practice.
* Motivating, guiding, and developing self and others; empowering and providing direction to support colleagues and ensuring compliance with CASA practices.
* Providing expert advice on more complex areas of operational processes and/or policy.
* Proposing and facilitating initiatives and contributing to business improvement strategies and changes in workplace practices.
* Representing CASA on specific issues at internal or external fora. Delivering moderately complex projects and initiatives that involve significant stakeholder engagement and impact business outcomes.
* Integrating aviation industry understanding into day-to-day decision-making. Anticipating how aviation requirements influence policies, systems, and services within this position's area of responsibility.
* Evaluating the effectiveness of risk management and risk assessment activities within sphere of responsibility.
* Maintaining a positive health and safety culture, including psychosocial wellbeing in the workplace and providing input, where appropriate, into decisions that may impact upon personal health, safety and wellbeing in the workplace.
* Demonstrating awareness of the diverse histories, cultures, and experiences First Nations Peoples and other cultural groups. Communicating with respect and understanding of balancing work, family and community responsibilities.
* Positively engaging in and responding to change. Supporting others through change.
* Other duties as required

Ideal Candidate

Our ideal candidate must demonstrate the following:

* 5+ years graphic design experience including:
* Leading the design and typesetting production of a range of publications such as annual reports, corporate plans and Flight Safety Australia magazine.
* Ensuring published materials comply with WCAG 2.2 accessibility guidelines and Digital Transformation Agency recommendations.
* Providing ongoing advice and user experience interface (UX) design ideas for digital channels, including development of prototypes for various user interface elements. Ensuring that all visual communication and materials are consistent and meet the requirements of the CASA brand guidelines.
* Exceptional visual communication skills, including the ability to distil complex and/or technical information graphically to non-technical audiences.
* Ability to apply technical/specialist knowledge, exercise initiative and use analysis and problem-solving skills to address moderately complex matters. Experience in applying judgement when making decisions within established standards, policies, and procedures.
* Significant experience in communicating complex information with clarity and influence. Building rapport and using negotiation and persuasion skills to resolve moderately complex issues, and tailoring messages and message delivery to achieve desired outcomes with varied stakeholders.
* Significant experience in managing relationships with stakeholders to achieve work area goals. Anticipating and responding to stakeholder needs and expectations. Developing and supporting complex relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
* Well-developed understanding of relevant civil aviation and other relevant Australian government legislation, regulations, and policy frameworks.
* Demonstrated ability to work with research and analysis to ensure application of best practice principals when making decisions that involve complex or escalated issues, longer-term planning and liaison with other sections on policy, project or operational issues.
* Demonstratable abilities in inclusion and collaboration by drawing on diverse perspectives to improve outcomes. Experience working with emotional intelligence to build positive relationships and resolve moderately complex interpersonal issues.
* Qualifications in graphic or visual design (e.g. Tertiary qualification in Design or equivalent).
* Provide a portfolio, with demonstrated experience across print, digital/UX work examples.
* Demonstrated experience at senior level in typesetting for large and small scale (print) and UI/UX (digital) design experience for online products.
* Demonstrated experience using Adobe Creative Suite software including; InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop and Figma, in a Mac OS environment.
* Demonstrated knowledge of Australian Government online standards and their application, particularly WCAG 2.2 standards and the Digital Services Standard.

Eligibility requirements

Employment with CASA is subject to conditions prescribed within the Civil Aviation Act 1988 (the Act) and the CASA Enterprise Agreement. The following eligibility requirements apply to this position:

* At a minimum, prospective CASA employees must undergo pre-employment screening and must be willing to provide the required information to successfully undergo a police record check.
* At a minimum, be an Australian citizen.
