About Linkly
Linkly is a PE-backed, Australian fintech focusing on payment integration solutions. We are a leading provider in ecommerce recurring billing, and our middleware powers over 200,000 terminals and processes over two billion transactions annually. Our applications support over 800 integrations into POS solutions. We have built our reputation through seamless integration of payment terminals and POS systems and are continuing to innovate in creating a terminal and acquirer independent payment solicitor for in-store. Our clients include major banks and retailers such as Woolworths, JB Hi-Fi, and Bunnings.
Our goal is to continuously lead the payments industry with new technology delivering value to clients, which who include merchants, banks, acquirers and POS vendors, expanding our presence into other regions.
Job Summary
The Database Administrator is responsible for the design, reliability, security, and performance of the SQL Server and PostgreSQL environments underpinning Linkly's Card Present transaction platform.
This role owns the database layer for mission-critical payment processing systems, ensuring high availability, replication integrity, disaster-recovery readiness, and continuous optimisation. You will work across on-premise and cloud-hosted environments, maintaining secure and resilient database platforms aligned to PCI DSS, industry best practice, and Linkly's operational standards.
The role is hands-on, technically deep, and central to the stability of Linkly's payments ecosystem.
Key Responsibilities:
* Database Architecture, Design & Implementation:
Design, implement, and maintain SQL Server and PostgreSQL schemas; lead HA/DR architecture (Patroni, etcd, AlwaysOn); build low-latency, high-volume payment database infrastructure; own schema governance, naming standards, and documentation.
* High Availability, Resilience & Replication:
Manage synchronous/asynchronous replication; optimise Patroni clusters and failover logic; oversee log shipping, replication monitoring, and multi-region DR testing; define RTO/RPO and maintain DR readiness.
* Performance Monitoring & Query Optimisation:
Diagnose and resolve performance issues across T-SQL and PL/pgSQL; tune indexes, execution plans, storage, memory, and autovacuum; optimise OLTP workloads for throughput and latency; collaborate with application, reporting, and integration teams.
* Security, Compliance & Access Management:
Implement PCI DSS–aligned security policies; manage encryption in transit and at rest (TDE, disk encryption, TLS); oversee RBAC, gMSA/AD integration, and secrets management; ensure auditability and secure handling of payment data.
* Automation, Tooling & Observability:
Develop automation using PowerShell, Bash, Python, and SQL; build proactive monitoring/alerting with Grafana, Kibana, Azure Monitor, and native tools; automate backups, exports, index maintenance, vacuuming, and cluster validation.
* Troubleshooting & Operational Support:
Lead incident response for CP databases; perform deep-dive diagnostics and root-cause analysis; resolve replication issues, deadlocks, lock/wait contention, and IO bottlenecks; work closely with developers, infra, security, and product teams.
* Data Migration, Upgrades & Platform Modernisation:
Lead major upgrades and schema migrations; support data warehouse and reporting pipelines; contribute to architectural roadmaps including cloud migration, containerisation, and next-generation HA models.
* Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement:
Serve as the SME for CP database design, performance, and reliability; partner with engineering, QA, architecture, and security teams; provide clear technical leadership and communication to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Essential
* 7–10+ years as a DBA or Senior DBA in high-availability, mission-critical environments.
* Deep experience with SQL Server (2012–2022) and PostgreSQL (12–17).
* Strong T-SQL and PL/pgSQL scripting, query writing, tuning, and analysis.
* Hands-on experience with:
* HA/DR (Patroni, etcd, AlwaysOn, clustering)
* Replication design and troubleshooting
* PCI DSS security and encryption standards
* Performance tuning and diagnostics
* Windows and Linux host administration
* Experience with cloud-hosted SQL environments (Azure SQL, AWS RDS/EC2, GCP).
* Proficiency in PowerShell, Bash, and SQL scripting for operational automation.
* Experience with backup strategies (native, pg_dump, pgBackRest, SQL Backup/Restore, WAL archiving).
* Excellent communication and documentation skills.
Desirable
* Payments industry or financial services experience.
* Exposure to Kafka, microservices, containerised architectures, or real-time transaction platforms.
* Familiarity with observability stacks (Prometheus, Grafana, ELK, Azure Monitor).
* Experience with CI/CD pipelines for schema deployment and migration.
* PowerBI / Tableau Experience
