School of Mathematics and Physics Full-time, fixed-term Research Platform Academic position for up to 4 years Base salary will be in the range of $112,572.59 - $133,381.10 17% Superannuation (Academic Level B) Based at our St Lucia campus About This Opportunity This is an exciting opportunity for a Research Platform Fellow to take part in a new initiative of the Queensland Government to establish The National Quantum Computing Testbed Facility (NQCT). The goal of NQCT is to develop the first Australian open-access quantum computer with direct access to quantum and control hardware. NQCT partners with CSIRO to develop a quantum software stack and with several industry partners for microwave control and quantum chip manufacturing. NQCT will include a large team of interdisciplinary researchers in quantum sciences and technology with ample opportunities for scientific growth and collaboration with both academia and industry. As Quantum Engineer/Research Fellow for the National Quantum Computing Testbed Facility, you will be a member of the hardware team and will take part in developing an open-source quantum platform. The position will not only allow the appointee to master their skills further by accessing the state-of-art equipment but will also offer a longer-term contract to boost your profile and establish an extensive collaboration links within both academia and industry. Key responsibilities include: In collaboration with senior staff and stakeholders: Contribute to the development of research design and proposals for The National Quantum Computing Testbed Facility (NQCT). Provide expertise and knowledge to end-users of the NQCT. Contribute, where relevant, to ensuring the Facility operates efficiently and effectively. Maintain accurate records, results and outcomes of experiments/technical activities. Ensure compliance with approved research ethics protocols. Ensure safe design principles are applied to all activities of the Facility following established discipline guidelines. Contribute to research quality assurance, control and continuous improvement activities with up-to-date SOPs. Provide specialist/technical expertise to maximise research outcomes in the NQCT. Assist in the design of complex research experiments, under supervision of senior staff. Set up equipment and perform non-routine experiments/techniques requiring advanced knowledge/skills. Assist scientific method development, validation and sample analysis studies including modifying existing research techniques to optimise the outcomes of the research endeavour. Contribute to and/or draft elements of research proposals, grant applications, ethics applications and/or other documentation. Conduct literature reviews to support research outcomes. Train users in specialised equipment, safety procedures, and risk management. Develop and maintain best practice through standard operating procedures. Mentor and support the development of staff, students, and community members. Contribute to professional, industry, and community bodies and initiatives. About You We are seeking an individual with a strong record in circuit-QED quantum computing (or relevant) who is looking to develop an enabling research capability that expands the recognition of their discipline expertise. Completion of a PhD in experimental solid-state quantum computing. Postdoc (research scientist) experience is desirable. A growing profile in research in research in the area related to circuit QED and/or superconducting quantum circuits. General knowledge in all of the following topics (and expert knowledge in some): nanofabrication, device control software, quantum computing with superconducting qubits. Experience in operation of dilution refrigerators and related infrastructure. A developing reputation and track record of publications in reputed refereed journals and presenting at conferences. Evidence of successfully seeking, obtaining and managing external research funding. A growing record of supervision of Honours and Research Higher Degree students to successful completion. Experience in meaningful internal service roles in conjunction with active contributions to external activities The successful candidate may be required to complete a number of pre-employment checks, including: right to work in Australia and education check.
