DFP Recruitment is seeking an experienced Lead Data Scientist to join our Federal Government client. Reporting to the Director, the successful candidate will support a key research program by applying advanced coding and analytical expertise to large administrative datasets. The role involves sophisticated quantitative analysis, high‑level economic and labour market research, and contributing to evidence‑based policy insights.
Role Responsibilities
* Deliver high‑quality statistical and analytical inputs for reports, briefing materials, and other documentation within tight timeframes.
* Communicate effectively, influence outcomes, and collaborate with a broad range of internal and external stakeholders to provide advice and gather intelligence.
* Build team capability through coaching, providing constructive performance feedback, and supporting professional development.
* Support and collaborate with a high‑performing, multidisciplinary, and geographically dispersed team including academics, economists, policy officers, and data scientists/analysts.
* Lead project delivery by managing milestones, prioritising competing demands, and ensuring deadlines are met.
Skills
* Advanced coding capability in R and Python.
* Demonstrated expertise working with Australian Government administrative datasets, including PLIDA.
* Strong experience in labour market analysis and/or economic modelling using advanced quantitative techniques.
* Experience using GitHub, Azure (Databricks and Data Lake), and Posit.
* Sound understanding of metadata, data standards, data requirements, and data infrastructure.
* Experience applying multilevel modelling frameworks.
* Knowledge of Bayesian inference and its practical applications.
* Post‑graduate qualifications in a relevant discipline (e.g. economics, econometrics, or data science) are essential.
