Purpose of the Position
The Language Centre Project Officer (Immersion) is a new position in the Centre for Australian Languages and Linguistics (CALL) team. This position will be responsible for leading the development of a Language Immersion Program in Central Australian languages. With others in the CALL team, and with FLA training, the project officer will research methods such as 'Fluency Transfer' and 'Comprehensible Input' to develop a comprehensive, sequenced curriculum for the project, designed to help new learners and those with passive language knowledge to become proficient speakers of their endangered Indigenous language. Processes for evaluation, monitoring and data collection will be built in. A reference group to support the program and its objectives will be created. The big vision is that as part of this enthusiastic and visionary team, it will ensure CALL is at the cutting edge with regard to Target 16 of Closing the Gap, 'to see languages flourishing' and the International Decade of Indigenous Languages priorities.
Duties
* Create a reference group to support the program and its objectives.
* Support the writing of grant funding applications for the immersion program.
* Lead the development of a curriculum, starting with beginners' level and working towards more advanced levels. This will involve creating workbooks and audio recordings with fluent speakers.
* Develop an assessment tool to guide learners' understanding of their learning.
* Create and implement continual improvement processes to monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of the immersion program, including development of a 'system' to measure the impact of the program.
* Develop models of delivery that work with the needs and priorities of the Central Australian community.
* Advocate on behalf of the program to raise community awareness, generate necessary funds and celebrate the successes.
* Develop relationships with other groups and organisations who have or are developing the fluency transfer models, with the aim of sharing resources and developing best practice for the emerging immersion/ fluency transfer systems.
