Salary

$95,275 to $108,150 pro rata per annum

Salary is in accordance with the Medical Practitioners Agreement 2022

Period of Employment

Fixed-term, full-time (and part-time hours available), working 76 hours per fortnight, commencing 12 January 2026 to 11 January 2027. (Please note opportunity for 24-month appointments may arise from this selection process)

Duties

The Resident Medical Officer (RMO) is responsible for the day-to-day management of private and public inpatients and outpatients within the Hospital (or rural facility). Provide after-hours emergency cover as determined by the relevant work unit. Rotations to Rural Practice sites across the state are available.

Tasmanian Health Service – Hospitals North West incorporating North West Regional Hospital, Burnie (NWRH) and Mersey Community Hospital, Latrobe (MCH):

Resident Medical Officers employed at the Tasmanian Health Service – North West have the unique opportunity to experience regional and rural medicine at two campuses in beautiful North-West Tasmania, and thrive in a supportive workplace with excellent educational opportunities. Allocations are personalised to meet the career goals of individual RMOs. Streams include Rural Generalist*, Basic Physician Training, Surgery/Orthopaedics, Critical Care*, Emergency Medicine, and General Practice.

Other opportunities include (but are not limited to) support for Certificate or Diploma courses, teaching and research opportunities.

*Allocation to Rural Generalist and Critical Care streams are by expression of interest each year; interested applicants are advised to apply to this RMO campaign then submit an EOI when requested. A requirement of these streams is that applicants hold Ahpra general registration.

THS – North West also welcome applications from PGY2+ International Medical Graduates holding (or eligible for) Limited or Provisional Registration with the Medical Board of Australia, and provide exceptional support to allow you to meet the requirements for progression to General Registration.

Resident Medical Officers working at Hospitals North West are expected to travel between NWRH and MCH and undertake shift work, as required for service provision.

Tasmanian Health Service - Launceston General Hospital:

Career Pathway opportunities

• Rural Generalist Pathway - Anaesthetics/Paediatrics/Obstetrics & Gynaecology /ED

• Critical Care foundation year - Emergency Department/Intensive Care Unit/Anaesthetics a combination of 3-month and 6-month rotations

• Surgical training pathways - Colorectal/Upper Gastrointestinal/Breast & Endocrine/Orthopaedics/Urology/Plastics/ENT

• Paediatric and O&G foundation year - 3-month and 6-month rotations available for preferencing

• General Practice rotations - St Helens, Scottsdale, and Northern Midlands (Longford and Perth)

Medical rotations:

Renal, Respiratory, Cardiology, Gastroenterology, Oncology, Haematology, General Medicine A, B, C & D, Stroke, Acute Medical Unit, Outreach

Surgical rotations:

General Surgery, Plastics/ENT/Ophthalmology, Colorectal, Orthopaedics, Urology, Upper Gastrointestinal, Breast & Endocrine

Other rotations include:
Paediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Anaesthetics, Intensive Care Unit, Emergency Medicine, Psychiatry, Rehabilitation Medicine

Tasmanian Health Service - Royal Hobart Hospital (RHH):

Royal Hobart Hospital (RHH) Resident Medical Officers (RMOs) are fully rotational with an option to preference a 12-month rotation in Emergency medicine.

Some of the rotations offered by RHH are listed within the application process and a full list of RMOs terms for RHH can be viewed via this hyperlink under RHH accredited terms PGY2+/IMGs

Applicants interested in preferencing a 12-month rotation in the RHH Emergency Department, this option can be selected within the RHH training stream preferences section of the application form.

RHH Basic Physician Training (BPT) positions:

Applicants who select a stream preference for a RHH BPT placement in this online application form will be considered for the BPT program once successfully obtaining a RHH RMO position through applying to the State-wide RMO Recruitment Campaign.

Essential Requirements

Registration/licences that are essential requirements of this role must remain current and valid at all times whilst employed in this role and the status of these may be checked at any time during employment. It is the employee’s responsibility to ensure that registration/licences remain current and to advise the Employer if their circumstances change. This includes notifying the Employer of any new criminal convictions and/or if a registration/licence is revoked, cancelled or has its conditions altered

Resident:

General or unconditional registration with the Medical Board of Australia.

Current Tasmanian Working with Children Registration (where applicable and as determined by individual position requirements).

The Head of the State Service has determined that the person nominated for this job is to satisfy a pre‑employment check before taking up the appointment, on promotion or transfer. The following checks are to be conducted:

1. Conviction checks in the following areas:
1. crimes of violence
2. sex related offences
3. serious drug offences
4. crimes involving dishonesty
1. Identification check
2. Disciplinary action in previous employment check.

Desirable Requirements:

Current Driver’s Licence (If applicable to allocated role).

Position Features:

The occupant will be required to participate in after-hours work.

Accommodation is available for Rural Placements

Doctors located in the North West Regional Hospital will be expected to provide Code Blue and MET calls to both public and private patients with the co-located Private facility.
