Our Journey:
Monash Children’s Department of Gastroenterology is one of only two paediatric gastroenterology departments in Victoria. The department provides outpatient clinics for children of all ages from newborn to adolescents with complex gastrointestinal conditions. We provide care for all aspects of paediatric and adolescent gastroenterology, hepatology (with the exception of liver transplantation and chronic viral hepatitis), nutrition and endoscopy.
We are currently seeking a Clinical Nurse Consultant to work within the unit, with a focus on Paediatric Inflammatory Bowel Disease (PIBD).
This role is a temporary part time role, working 48 hours a fortnight (, Monday to Friday for an initial period of 12 months, although we hope to make this permanent. The successful applicant must be available to work on Tuesdays, pm, for the outpatient IBD management clinic and alternate Wednesdays,, for outpatient transition/young adult clinic.
A Day in the Life:
IBD is a chronic, incurable condition caused by inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract. This group of lifelong conditions include Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. Children with IBD often require complex multidisciplinary management often incorporating highly specialised medications including biological therapies. We have a specific PIBD clinic as well as young adult’s inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) transition clinic. We look after nearly 300 children with IBD including approximately 110 who are receiving biological therapies.
In this newly created role you will act as a point of contact for our patients and families living with PIBD, providing support and education to ensure they can effectively and confidently manage the condition in their homes. You will act as a link between patients and medical teams in the hospital and you will be actively involved in supporting these patients as they transition into the adult service. Our team will provide support, training and education for you to gain a full understanding of PIBD ensuring you can successfully support these families to adhere to their treatment regimes and manage consistent care plans at home. The role will involve you:
1. Attending clinics on Tuesdays between pm for the outpatient IBD management clinic and alternate Wednesdays between for the outpatient transition/young adult clinic
2. Providing ongoing education and support in relation to PIBD and its treatments to reduce attendance at ED
3. Coordinating PIBD services in collaboration with multi-disciplinary team, inclusive of pharmacy, dietician, and external service providers
4. Developing, implementing, evaluating and revising clinical practise guidelines, procedures, competencies, care plans and educational information for nurses along with parents/carers regarding PIBD
5. Acting as the point of contact for families experiencing PIBD to ultimately reduce their presentation at ED
About You:
You are an experienced Paediatric Nurse with some knowledge of Gastroenterology, and you are looking to further your career, particularly in the field of PIBD. You have a natural rapport with children and pride yourself on the family centred care you provide. You are a nurse who is passionate about providing outstanding evidence based care, and patient and family satisfaction is top of your mind. With a key part of this role being education, you communicate clearly and effectively, and you are successfully able to build and maintain relationships across the health service. You demonstrate:
6. A desire to upskill into this specialist area of nursing with ongoing support and education provided to you, in a role that you can really make your own
7. An ability to use critical thinking, problem solving skills and evidence based practice in the provision of care for children
What you need:
8. Current AHPRA registration
9. To be considered for this role, you must be able to work on Tuesdays between pm for the outpatient IBD management clinic and alternate Wednesdays between for the outpatient transition/young adult clinic
10. Recent and relevant clinical experience in paediatric nursing, a theoretic knowledge in PIBD including therapy and management of IBD is advantageous, but we will provide training and support to grow your knowledge in this area
11. Post Graduate qualifications in Paediatric Nursing are desirable
