Synopsis:

About the role

City of Melbourne has an exciting opportunity for 2 tertiary students to undertake a student placement with the Parks and City Greening Branch between February to June 2026.

At Parks and City Greening, our vision is to expertly create globally recognised parks, streetscapes and urban ecosystems that are resilient, healthy, connected, and within reach of everyone. We deliver a range of programs, projects and initiatives to enhance greening in the city.

As part of this placement, we're seeking 2 students to work with us on the projects below.

Project 1: Tracking sustainability standards in planning applications (Planning Scheme Amendment C376: Sustainable Building Design)

Planning Scheme Amendment C376: Sustainable Building Design is a planning scheme amendment for the City of Melbourne which aims to improve the environmental performance of private development across the city.

We are looking for a student to assess the validity of current live planning applications against the proposed new sustainability standards. You will be working closely with green infrastructure and environmentally sustainable design officers. As part of this placement, you will be recording results of sustainability standards in planning applications against whether they meet the requirements of Amendment C376. As well as data collection, you will be able to explore visualisation of this data and learn about the Green Factor tool.

You will be working with the Open Space Planning and Green Infrastructure team who plan and deliver parks and city greening initiatives for the health and wellbeing of the community and the environment.

Project 2: Developing a risk-based framework to manage unauthorised park access

City of Melbourne manages 480 hectares of internationally acclaimed parks and gardens. The Park Assets Team provides expert advice and information management of the complete life cycle of assets, asset data and processes, including capital works renewal planning.

Working alongside the Park Assets Team, we are looking for a student to assist with developing a risk-based framework for managing unauthorised access across our networks of parks. This will help us to understand how to best manage these associated risks with different control measures.

As part of the placement, you also will have opportunities to learn about how we ensure our parks are renewed and maintained to a high standard.

About you

You bring passion, insight, and collaboration to everything you do.

You may also:

* Be an analytical thinker
* Enjoy working with data
* Have experience in urban greening, parks management or horticulture.
