The ALS Hydrographics Team in Maffra, Victoria is seeking ambitious applicants for the position of Trainee Hydrographer / Technical Assistant within the environmental monitoring team. The successful candidate will receive on-the-job training as well as enrolment and support to complete a Diploma of Water Operations (Hydrography). As a permanent position, this role is Monday to Friday 8:00AM to 4:30PM. The Day to Day Responsibilities include: Hands on role, requiring teamwork, reliability and initiative Routine visitation and maintenance of remote environmental monitoring sites, consisting mainly of stream flow monitoring and meteorological monitoring sites Collect and verify environmental data using various software packages and scientific instruments in the field (streamflow gauging, Water quality/sampling etc) Assistance in completing other environmental monitoring projects and routine works as required Accurate Record keeping including field notes, photographs, and maps Assisting in the upgrade of old, and installation of new environmental monitoring stations across the Gippsland Region Use of a wide range of hand tools; work can include manual excavation for extended periods of time The Essentials The successful candidate will possess the following skills and abilities: Environmental or trade-based qualification preferred, but not essential, school leavers are welcome to apply Strong work ethic, who is reliable and shows initiative Physically fit with a desire for working in a hands-on, outdoor environment Experience in the use of hand, power and pneumatic tools is highly desirable Electronics and mechanical aptitude an advantage Lateral thinking and problem-solving skills Sound knowledge of, and adherence to general HSE principles and practices Ability to swim Ability to perform manual handling tasks Good computer skills/aptitude Working at ALS The ALS team is a diverse and dedicated community united by our passion to make a difference in the world.
