The training opportunity

The Border Force Officer Recruit Training (BFORT) program is an entry level program.

It is a paid traineeship involving classroom learning and on-the-job experience that prepares you for operational duties across Australia's border environments. As a Border Force Officer, you could be protecting Australia's borders across air, land or sea. You'll play a vital role in protecting communities and contributing to Australia's national security.

Upon graduation roles include:

* processing passengers at an air or seaports
* searching cargo at an air or seaports
* inspecting mail at a clearance centre
* investigating illegal border activity
* assisting in client services

Training locations are determined by ABF operational requirements and may not always be available in your preferred state or region. It is recommended that you select the location that best suits you when applying for a BFORT role. The current BFORT program is advertised to fill positions located specifically in Adelaide and South Australia (SA).

If you apply for a role that is located outside your current city or region, you will be responsible for any relocation costs. You must be available to commence training on the specified start date when you are offered a BFORT role. You will remain in this location for the duration of the training program and after you successfully complete and graduate. Once you graduate you can apply for opportunities in other locations.

This recruitment process is being used to fill multiple vacancies. A merit pool may be established and used to fill similar vacancies for up to 18 months.

* Earn while you learn through the Border Force Officer Recruit Training (BFORT) program at the APS3 classification ($66,839 - $76,792) plus 15.4% superannuation, with additional shift penalties and allowances applicable during operational placements (Successful applicants will benefit from an Enterprise Agreement salary increase effective 12 March 2026 https://www.homeaffairs.gov.au/ea/Documents/enterprise-agreement-2024-27.pdf).

At the time of applying, you must:

* Be an Australian Citizen, aged 18 or older
* Have a minimum Year 10 certificate or a Certificate IV/Diploma level qualification or Trade Certificate and/or relevant work experience
* Be able to obtain an Australian Government Security Clearance (AGSVA) and an Employee Suitability Clearance (ESC).
* Be able to obtain and maintain relevant medical and fitness requirements

Applicants may be required to undertake psychometric assessment as part of the recruitment process.
