Risk and Assurance Officer
Full-time Permanent role $51.42 per hour + superannuation
Play a key role in strengthening risk, assurance and business continuity across Wodonga Council. As Risk and Assurance Officer, you will support the delivery of Council's risk management, internal audit, insurance, and business continuity functions—helping ensure we meet our statutory obligations and supporting a proactive, accountable governance culture.

Key Aspects Of The Role
Lead and strengthen risk management Maintain and continuously improve Council's Risk Management Framework, ensuring risks are identified, assessed, and managed consistently across all directorates. You'll work closely with managers to review risk registers, monitor treatment plans, and provide practical advice that strengthens organisational resilience and reduces exposure.Coordinate internal audit and committee functions Oversee the end-to-end coordination of Council's internal audit program, including planning, stakeholder engagement, monitoring recommendations, and reporting outcomes. You'll also manage the Audit and Risk Committee operations - preparing agendas and reports, coordinating logistics, and acting as a key liaison between senior leaders, auditors and committee members.Support business continuity and compliance Coordinate the development, testing and ongoing refinement of the Business Continuity Plan to ensure Council can respond effectively to disruptions. You'll also support the maintenance of governance systems, statutory registers, and compliance tracking processes to ensure legislative obligations are met.Manage insurance and claims Administer Council's insurance portfolio, including managing inwards and outwards claims, coordinating renewals, and providing risk-based recommendations to leadership. You'll ensure accurate documentation, timely responses, and strong relationships with insurers and brokers.Build governance capability and culture Deliver training and awareness initiatives that strengthen risk literacy across the organisation. Through clear communication, practical tools, and consistent follow-through, you'll help embed a culture of accountability, transparency, and continuous improvement.

We're seeking a capable and confident governance professional who can operate with autonomy, exercise sound judgement, and build strong working relationships across the organisation. You'll be someone who enjoys working with complex information, translating legislative requirements into practical action, and contributing to a culture of integrity and continuous improvement.
What You Will Bring
Relevant tertiary qualification in governance, risk management, business, law, commerce, public administration or a related field (or working towards), with demonstrated experience in a risk, audit, governance or compliance role — ideally within local government.Proven ability to apply risk management principles, coordinate internal audit processes, and contribute to the development and implementation of governance frameworks and business continuity plans.Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret legislation and provide clear, practical written and verbal communication skills, including report writing, stakeholder engagement, and committee proficiency in Microsoft 365 applications and experience using risk or information management systems.
