About The Organisation And The Role
Temple Israel is South Africa's largest Progressive Jewish congregation, offering inclusive, inspiring services in person and online. We are seeking a technically skilled, calm, and detail-oriented Sound Technician to oversee the setup, live streaming, and audio-visual management of services and events at our Wynberg and Greenpoint synagogue.
This is an exciting opportunity for someone with a passion for sound, videography, and production, who thrives in live environments and is familiar with faith-based or theatre-style work settings.
Main Duties & Responsibilities
* Set up all AV equipment weekly (usually Fridays) including mixer, mic stands, sound snake, PA system, and camera tripods at Temple Israel Wynberg.
* Operate and manage live streaming through OBS Studio (Open Broadcaster Software).
* Conduct camera setup and positioning of multiple cameras (2-3) and ensure clear framing of the service.
* Check and maintain network connectivity for streaming.
* Live mixing of sound, instruments, singing and speaking voices.
* Moderate social media live streams and comments (e.g., on Facebook).
* Go live 10 minutes before service start; manage audio levels and adapt mic usage during the service.
* Adjust sound levels and inputs on-the-fly to suit different speakers and events.
* Work discreetly and professionally during religious services.
* Pack down and safely store equipment after each service.
* Manage recordings of services when required.
* Ensure end-of-service protocols are followed, including closing off livestreams and shutting down software and equipment.
Required Skills & Experience
* Work experience and industry exposure.
* Experience in sound engineering, live event production, or videography is advantageous.
* Previous exposure to theatre productions, faith-based services, or live performance environments is advantageous.
* Hands-on experience with OBS Studio or similar streaming platforms.
* Proven ability to operate and troubleshoot live sound and PA systems, including mixers, mics, and audio routing.
* Comfortable managing multi-camera setups and basic video production tasks.
* Experience with music advantageous.
* Troubleshooting and maintaining live stream uptime.
* Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
* Professional and calm communicator, especially during live services.
* Able to liaise respectfully with rabbis, staff, musicians, and community members.
* Attentive to instructions and capable of anticipating technical needs during services.
* Comfortable moderating social media platforms (e.g., Facebook Live) and interacting with viewers when necessary.
* Collaborative with music leaders and community leaders.
* Excellent administration and organisational skills.
* Detail-oriented in setup, execution, and pack-down of AV equipment.
* Strong time management: punctual, prepared, and efficient.
* Keeps track of technical checklists, network testing, and service requirements.
* Able to coordinate weekly service preparation (equipment, streaming setup, camera framing).
* General solid technical understanding of sound mixing, OBS live streaming, and basic camera operation.
* Must be available Friday evenings, Saturday mornings and Jewish holidays.
* Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and be respectful and discreet during religious services.
* Knowledge of remote desktop tools and basic computer literacy (email, cloud storage, etc.).
* Reliable transport – to move and carry equipment as venues change frequently.
* Knowledge of, and / or respect for, Progressive Jewish ideals and practice is important.
