About the role
Join Are Media's dynamic Technology team as a Software Developer, where you'll play a crucial role in developing and maintaining cutting-edge digital platforms for Australia's leading lifestyle and entertainment brands. This permanent full-time position offers an exciting opportunity to work with modern web technologies while contributing to high-traffic websites and applications that reach millions of Australian users. Based in Sydney, you'll collaborate with a passionate team of developers, designers, and digital strategists to deliver innovative solutions that enhance user experience across Are Media's diverse portfolio of publications and digital properties.
Duties
* Develop, maintain, and enhance web applications using PHP, React, and WordPress
* Build responsive, user-friendly interfaces and implement modern front-end solutions
* Create and customize WordPress themes, plugins, and functionality to meet business requirements
* Collaborate with cross-functional teams including designers, content creators, and product managers
* Write clean, efficient, and well-documented code following industry best practices
* Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues across various digital platforms
* Optimize website performance, loading speeds, and user experience
* Participate in code reviews and maintain version control using Git
* Stay updated with emerging technologies and recommend improvements to existing systems
* Support content management workflows and assist with digital publishing requirements
* Contribute to technical documentation and knowledge sharing within the team
Skills and experience
* 3+ years web development experience with strong PHP (OOP), React/modern JavaScript, and advanced WordPress (custom themes + plugins)
* Solid HTML5, CSS3, responsive design, MySQL/database optimisation, Git, and REST API integrations
* Degree in Computer Science/Software Engineering (or similar) plus experience with other CMS platforms, build tools (Webpack/npm), cloud platforms (AWS/Azure/GCP), SEO and analytics
* Experience in media, publishing or high-traffic environments preferred
* Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, clear communication, adaptability, ability to work in fast-paced environments, and strong time management
