Lead one of NSW’s largest and most significant regional health servicesShape the future of healthcare for diverse regional, rural and remote communitiesDrive system-wide impact through strategic leadership across the NSW Health network
Overview
Lead the delivery of healthcare services across communities throughout south western NSW, ensuring safe, high-quality care across a diverse regional population.
The organisation
Murrumbidgee Local Health District (MLHD) delivers healthcare services across one of the largest and most diverse regions of south western NSW, providing care to communities spread across a vast and geographically dispersed area.
Through a network of hospitals, multipurpose services and community health facilities, the District delivers a comprehensive range of acute, sub-acute, mental health, community and population health services. These services support regional centres as well as rural and remote communities, ensuring people across the region can access high-quality healthcare close to home.
Operating within the NSW Health system, MLHD works in close partnership with the Ministry of Health, Local Health Districts, statewide health agencies and academic institutions to strengthen clinical services, workforce capability and health outcomes across the region. The District is supported by a dedicated workforce and strong partnerships with clinicians, primary health networks, community organisations and local leaders. These relationships underpin the District’s commitment to improving health outcomes and ensuring equitable access to care while responding to the evolving needs of the communities it serves.
The Murrumbidgee region encompasses vibrant regional centres, communities, and diverse agricultural landscapes. The District serves a population that includes a significantly higher proportion of First Nations peoples than the NSW state average, with Aboriginal communities playing a vital role in the cultural identity and strength of the region. This context places a strong emphasis on delivering culturally responsive healthcare and working in partnership with Aboriginal communities to improve health outcomes. For many leaders, the opportunity to contribute to the health and wellbeing of these diverse communities while living and working in a connected regional environment is a defining feature of the role.
The opportunity
Reporting to the Board and accountable to the Secretary of NSW Health, the Chief Executive provides strategic leadership, direction and management of Murrumbidgee Local Health District. The role carries responsibility for governance, financial stewardship, clinical safety and quality and the overall performance of the District.
Leading a geographically dispersed organisation, the Chief Executive will guide the strategic, clinical and operational direction of the District, ensuring services are delivered effectively, equitably and within the allocated budget while meeting agreed performance standards and service obligations.
Working closely with the Board, clinicians and the executive leadership team, the Chief Executive will build organisational capability and guide the delivery of high-quality healthcare across the District’s network of hospitals and community services.
Workforce leadership and sustainability are central to the role to lead the development of a resilient, skilled and engaged workforce that can meet the current and future health needs of the Murrumbidgee region. This includes strengthening recruitment and retention across regional, rural and remote settings and fostering a positive, inclusive and culturally safe workplace.
A central focus of the role is ensuring health services across the region continue to evolve in response to population needs, enabling communities to access appropriate treatment when required, as close as possible to where they live.
Beyond the District itself, the Chief Executive contributes to the leadership of the broader NSW Health system. Operating in a highly visible leadership role, the Chief Executive represents the District across government, health sector and community forums, building strong partnerships and advocating for the health needs of the region.
This role provides the opportunity to lead a major regional health service and play a pivotal role in shaping the future of healthcare for communities across the Murrumbidgee.
