Due to continued growth and expansion, we are looking for a Museum Manager who will work collaboratively with our Manager of Events and Public Programs. Both positions will be tasked with responsibilities for the implementation of specific elements of the Abbey Museum Strategic Plan 2025-2030 and each will report directly to the Board of the Abbey Museum of Art & Archaeology.
Our Museum Manager will lead the operations, financial performance, and the teams of our Museum, Gallery, Administration, Cafe, and facilities. This role will include regular consultation with the Abbey Community and a six-month mentorship by two past Directors: Edith Cuffe (Director 30 years) in the duties of the Museum manager/coordinator and Michael Strong (Emeritus Director and current Senior Curator) in the management of the Abbey Museum Collections.

The successful candidate will be capable of managing situations and people that don't always need the 'technical answer' but a mindful negotiation of personalities, history, goals, understanding, and best practice.
Key Responsibilities
Museum and Gallery Operations
Managing, guiding, inspiring, and developing teams of both staff and volunteers
Collaborate with and support the Senior Curator on the implementation of the strategies for the development, preservation, documentation, research of the collection
Collaborate with the Education Manager and Senior Curator on the development of new education programs linked to curriculum, the Museum's significant collections, their stories, and audience needs
Collaborate with the Senior Curator, Education team, and relevant staff on the further development of tours for group bookings
Collaborate with the Manager Events and Public Program to contribute to and support the strategies in the marketing plan
Implement Abbey Museum Supporter Programs and strategic partnerships with the Board
Represent the organisation at official occasions and negotiations with the Board and the Manager of Events and Public Programs
Stay informed about museum and arts industry trends and best practice
Support the Board-led strategies to future-proof the Museum
Workplace Policies and Procedures
Develop and implement a comprehensive people strategy for museum staff and volunteers with the HR adviser
Develop and implement a comprehensive workplace health and safety strategy for museum staff and volunteers
Oversight of development and implementation of strategies for Environmental Sustainability, Accessibility, Inclusivity, First Peoples' policies, and protocols in museum operations
Develop the annual budget for Board approval and monitor budget performance for reports to Board; Oversee Accounts and HR Payroll with the Manager of Events & Public Programs
Develop strategies and build relationships for revenue growth
Responsible for grant applications and acquittals for museum programs
Collaboratively direct the fundraising program including approaches to government, fundraising campaigns, donor strategy, and bequests
Compliance and Reporting
Oversight of Compliance with relevant laws, regulations, and industry standards, and identifying and mitigating potential risks for museum, collections, and education programs and ensuring the safety and security of the workplace
Oversight of the implementation of governance standards for internal and external processes and strategies identified for Goal 3 in Strategic Plan 2025-2030
Reporting and communicating to the Board for identified areas of responsibility of the museum operational plan
Requirements
Demonstrated experience in the not-for-profit sector, managing tight budgets and grant applications
Demonstrated experience in a team-oriented management style with small, tight-knit, diverse teams and multiple reporting lines
Demonstrated experience with and a deep appreciation of museum ethics and protocols for managing the collection
Demonstrated commitment to the equitable provision of services and inclusive work practices
Demonstrated ability to 'get into the trenches' with team members as required
Relevant work experience in a museum or gallery
Tertiary qualifications in museum studies, heritage management, business, or related discipline or equivalent relevant experience
Tertiary qualifications in history, heritage, or art
This role is a full-time position with some requirement to attend events after hours and on weekends. Staff and volunteers at the Abbey Museum share a passion for preserving our collections and communicating its stories. We are seeking an individual with a similar drive, commitment, and understanding.
