The Opportunity
At Shine, we champion better justice for our clients. As a full‐time, permanent Deputy National Legal Costing Manager, you will be based out of either our Brisbane or Melbourne office. Your role is to lead a national, internally focused legal costing team and drive performance across a nationally disbursed team. You will coach an eight‐person team, ensuring day‐to‐day leadership, coaching, and strong outcomes.
Responsibilities
* Assist the national legal costing manager in managing team performance by allocating workloads effectively.
* Act as an escalation point for complex legal costing issues, proactively resolving them with internal and external stakeholders.
* Provide recommendations on optimal costing methodologies (court scale and loading, hourly rates, fixed fee and hybrid models) across various jurisdictions to maximise case recoverability.
* Train legal teams on time‐recording practices, enhancing cost‐recovery efficiency.
* Co‐coach legal, settlement and third‐party recovery teams on cost management, including cost agreements, cost recovery strategies, and negotiation of settlements.
* Prepare accurate and comprehensive cost assessments for compulsory conferences, mediations and post‐resolution proceedings to optimise recoverability.
* Develop strategies to reduce client complaints regarding costs, thereby improving client service.
* Monitor compliance with relevant legislative and jurisdictional costing requirements.
What you'll bring
* Significant demonstrated experience as a legal costing solicitor, with a thorough understanding of optimal costing methodologies.
* Experience and/or the desire and aptitude to lead a high‐performing team.
* Commercial acumen, with the ability to drive enhancements to cost‐recovery efficiency.
* Exceptional stakeholder management skills, including internal stakeholders, clients and third parties such as external cost assessors.
* Strong statistical and numerical understanding of data, including robust Microsoft Excel skills.
* Strong attention to detail and problem‐solving skills.
