Position overview
The Lead Metrologist will be responsible for management of calibration, acceptance testing and instrument standards and ensuring compliance and quality management standards are maintained. The SML Lead Metrologist will have excellent communication and engagement skills suited to collaborating with managers, scientists and technical staff across the Bureau. They will have detailed knowledge and experience in working in a scientific team in a data-rich environment to ensure delivery of products and services to customer expectations. They will participate in ensuring the quality and effectiveness of products and services and the ongoing development, implementation and continual improvement of the quality management system to achieve and maintain the ongoing certification of compliance with the ISO 9001 and ISO 17025 quality management standards. The successful candidate will help grow the world-class standards and metrology quality assurance capability and be focused on customer delivery.
The Lead Metrologist will report directly to the Standards and Metrology Laboratory Manager (EL2L).
Role responsibilities
The responsibilities of the role include but are not limited to:
* Manage, coordinate, supervise, and undertake when required, calibration, testing and maintenance of laboratory and field equipment.
* Maintain formal technical control over calibrations and testing relating to multiple assigned fields of measurement.
* Liaise with Project Managers, the Standards & Metrology Laboratory Manager, the Principal Metrologist, Inventory Officers and Calibration Officers to schedule equipment calibrations to align with rollout schedules and optimise utilisation of laboratory capacity.
* Conduct and supervise metrology research, development and/or evaluation and make recommendations in support of proposed changes to Calibration systems and Observations systems and processes, including siting of new instruments.
* Document processes, results and studies in the form of procedures, technical reports and work instructions.
* Design, code, test and document computer programs in support of scientific and operational activities.
* Participate in ensuring the quality and effectiveness of products and services and the ongoing development, implementation and continual improvement of the quality management systems to achieve and maintain the ongoing certification of compliance with the ISO 9001 and ISO/IEC 17025 quality management standards.
* Model APS Values and ensure that policies and practices in relation to all elements of the Bureau's Commitment to Diversity & Inclusion are applied in the workplace and beyond.
