We are seeking a hands-on Deputy Farm Manager to support daily operations at our Ranch Road Farm. Working closely with the Farm Manager, you will help lead all aspects of papaya production, which is currently at 100h of Papaya footprint—from planting through to harvest—while ensuring safety, quality, and productivity remain at the highest standard.
About the Company
Founded in 1945, Mackays Group is a family-owned business that has grown from a single paddock into Australia's leading banana producer. Now operated by the family's third generation, the company employs more than 550 people across nine locations from Lakeland to Melbourne.
Over its 80-year history, Mackays has diversified into growing papaya, sugarcane, passionfruit, coffee, and cocoa, and has expanded vertically into produce sales, ripening, and processing.
Key Responsibilities
• Support all papaya farm operations across our 100-ha footprint, from planting through to harvest
• Lead compliance with WHS, food safety, and environmental regulations
• Maintain high standards of fruit quality, farm efficiency, and operational performance
• Supervise and support Field Supervisors and farm staff
• Assist in strategic planning and the implementation of farm best practices
• Oversee fertiliser and spray programs, and manage pest and disease control
• Ensure proper use and maintenance of all farm infrastructure and equipment
• Maintain accurate and detailed farm records and reports
• Contribute to hiring, training, performance management, and staff development
About You
We're looking for someone who:
• Can prioritise workloads and meet deadlines
• Has a strong focus on safety, quality, and continuous improvement
• Demonstrates strong leadership and team development skills
• Shows excellent attention to detail and strong problem-solving abilities
Desirable:
• Degree or Diploma in Agriculture, Horticulture, or related discipline
• Experience with food hygiene, HACCP, chemical and fertiliser programs, pest and disease management, irrigation systems, freight/logistics, and farm machinery operations
• HR Licence & High-Risk Work Licence
• First Aid Certificate
