Finance Officer - Accounts Payable (Cairns Based)

Location: Cairns, Queensland 4870

The Role: The Finance Officer - Accounts Payable is responsible for the accurate and timely processing of supplier invoices, credit notes, staff reimbursements, payment requests and inventory in accordance with Council policy and procedures. The role supports Council financial operations by ensuring payments are completed efficiently, suppliers are supported professionally, and financial records are maintained to a high standard. At times this role may be required to assist in other areas of Finance, such as accounts receivable, purchasing and general finance.

This role is based in Cairns as part of the corporate services team however regular visits to Pormpuraaw will be a requirement of the role.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Process supplier invoices, credit notes and payment requests accurately and promptly ensuring they reconcile to associated purchase order.
2. Conduct weekly, emergency and monthly payment runs including preparing EFT files.
3. Maintain creditor master data and ensure compliance with Council policies.
4. Reconcile creditor statements and resolve outstanding issues in an efficient manner.
5. Process travel allowance claims, staff reimbursements and corporate card transactions.
6. Assist with month-end processes including accruals and reconciliations.
7. Provide excellent customer service to suppliers and internal staff.
8. Maintain accurate financial documentation and support audit requirements.
9. Assist other finance functions as required from time to time.
10. Undertake training and contribute to continuous improvement.
11. Assist with the processing of inventory stock movements inwards and outwards.

Selection Criteria:

1. Administrative Skills: You have a demonstrated ability to efficiently organise, prioritise, and manage daily administrative tasks. Shows strong attention to detail, excellent time management, and the capacity to multitask in a dynamic work environment.
2. Communication and Interpersonal Skills: You have very good written and verbal communication skills, with the proven ability to convey information clearly and interact effectively with a wide range of individuals. Displays active listening, empathy, and professionalism in all interactions. Capable of building positive working relationships, resolving conflicts, and contributing effectively to team environments and client engagement.
3. Digital Literacy: You have strong competency in utilising digital technologies, tools, and platforms—including software applications, SynergySoft Accounting Systems and online banking systems—to perform work tasks efficiently.
4. Accounts Payable Knowledge: You have a solid understanding of accounts payable processes and a proven capacity to ensure compliance with financial procedures.

Qualifications

Essential

* Cert 3 in Bookkeeping or Accounting.
* Minimum 3 years' experience in accounts payable or finance administration experience.
* High accuracy and numeracy skills.
* Strong communication skills.
* Proficiency in Microsoft Office and financial system
* Ability to meet deadlines and work independently.
* Understanding of confidentiality requirements.

Desirable

* Local government finance experience.
* SynergySoft Accounting System experience

Licences

* A clear National Criminal History Check
* Current C Class Drivers Licence - desirable
