Senior Equipment and Outfit Engineer

Your new company A leading defence engineering organisation supporting major Royal Australian Navy platforms is seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer to join its Sydney‑based team. The organisation operates within a long‑term design support and sustainment program, delivering complex electrical and control systems solutions across in‑service naval vessels.
Your new role Reporting to the Project Engineering Manager, you will provide senior‑level outfit and equipment engineering support across ship platforms. This role focuses on the design, integration and assurance of shipboard equipment, spaces and auxiliary systems, working closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams and key stakeholders.Key responsibilities include:Delivering outfit and equipment design solutions for ship platforms, including: Compartment and space arrangementsStructural closures and fire protectionDeck layouts, equipment arrangements, ladders and platformsCargo handling, mooring and anchoring systemsMinor foundations, coatings and deck coveringsDeveloping and reviewing engineering documentation, including drawings, reports, impact assessments and specificationsSupporting requirements analysis, verification and compliance activitiesEnsuring designs meet classification society rules, IMO and relevant Australian standardsPlanning and coordinating engineering activities from concept through to deliveryParticipating in design coordination and design review meetings with internal teams and clientsUndertaking design studies and analysis using 3D modelling, hull design and engineering software toolsSupporting onboard installation activities, including scopes of work, installation packages and test proceduresLiaising with internal stakeholders, clients and subcontractorsManaging assigned tasks, schedules and priorities within a project environment
What you'll need to succeed Strong experience in equipment and outfit design for ships or complex industrial platformsUnderstanding of shipboard mechanical and auxiliary systems (e.g. propulsion interfaces, hydraulics, piping, cranes, HVAC, fire systems)Experience working to classification society and regulatory requirementsAbility to read and interpret engineering drawings and design documentationExperience using CAD / 3D modelling tools such as AutoCAD or MicroStationStrong communication and stakeholder engagement skillsAbility to work autonomously, manage competing priorities and deliver in a high‑pressure environmentEligibility to obtain and maintain NV1 security clearance
