Our Organisation

At The Benevolent Society, we believe every person deserves to live life on their own terms, with dignity, respect and a sense of belonging. For over two centuries, this belief has shaped who we are and how we work.

We're working towards a just society where everyone feels valued, safe and included. As a not-for-profit, independent and non-religious organisation, we proudly embrace diversity and are deeply committed to reconciliation. We welcome people from all backgrounds, identities and experiences to join us in creating positive change.

About the role

The role involves working closely with families experiencing domestic and family violence (DFV) to provide a safe and nurturing environment for children by strengthening protective factors and reducing risk factors that may lead to neglect, child abuse or family violence.

This role will be embedded in our Child Youth and Family programmes, and you will work closely with the local CYF team. You will also provide group facilitation in schools or other community settings, parental education, working with perpetrators of DFV, and community outreach to build positive, trusting relationships and support families in creating safe and nurturing environments.

Collaborate with Aboriginal staff and local communities to ensure culturally sensitive and respectful service delivery.

The role includes proactive community engagement, risk assessment, safety planning and linking families with additional support services as needed. This position offers the opportunity to make a significant impact on the lives of vulnerable families and contribute to the broader goal of reducing the risk of entry into the child protection system, improving community participation, and fostering belonging and empowerment among clients.

Duties

* Provide education, interventions and specialist advice that supports the CYF team working with families experiencing domestic and family violence.
* Work with parents to develop their parenting skills to better meet the needs of their children, focusing on preventing violence, neglect and child abuse.
* Work individually in the home and facilitate relevant group programmes, providing information and resources regarding community services using evidence‐based approaches.
* Work with family members—including perpetrators of DFV—to address negative parenting behaviours such as violence, coercive control and other harmful actions that impact relationships and development.
* Coordinate with other service providers to plan and promote group work in the local area, creating partnerships to improve outcomes for clients.
* Deliver and promote community education workshops to raise awareness of domestic violence issues that may affect clients, address trauma and reduce social isolation.
* Engage clients using strengths‐based assessment tools to develop, implement, monitor and review their plans and outcomes, ensuring clients are actively involved in the process.

Salary and Benefits

Salary: Up to $15,900 of pre‐tax salary can be packaged to cover everyday expenses.

Work/Life Balance: Flexible arrangements, hybrid options and additional days off each month.

Recognition and Reward: Long‐service leave after five years and various recognition programmes.

Wellness: Fitness passport, Employee Assistance Program and options to purchase additional leave.

Professional Development: Tailored career development opportunities for growth.

Reconciliation Commitment: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employees entitled to paid cultural leave days.

Skills and Requirements

Relevant qualification in Social Work, Psychology, Community Services or a related human services field (Diploma or higher).

Experience delivering intensive casework with vulnerable children and families, ideally within family preservation, child protection or community‐based support programmes.

Sound understanding of trauma‐informed practice, child safety and risk assessment, with the ability to identify and respond to child protection concerns.

Strong communication and engagement skills, including culturally safe practice and effective collaboration with families and service partners.

Practical requirements: confidence with case documentation and systems, a current NSW Driver's Licence and NSW Working With Children Check.

If you identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people, we encourage you to apply. The Benevolent Society recognises and values cultural knowledge and wisdom of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and is committed to cultural safety in the workplace.

Legal and Diversity Statement

The Benevolent Society respects and promotes human rights and diversity. We are committed to building an inclusive culture where individuals from all backgrounds and identities are welcomed and valued. We pride ourselves on being a client‐safe and child‐safe organisation, which is why all staff undergo comprehensive employment screening. We value relationships with local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and welcome applications. To ensure you are best supported with your application if you have any specific needs requiring a reasonable adjustment, let us know what accommodations you require.
