The Opportunity: Weâre seeking a System Administrator Team Lead to drive the delivery and maintenance of robust, secure, and high-performing Defence ICT networks and infrastructure across both fixed and deployable environments. This pivotal leadership role combines hands-on technical expertise with team management, guiding a dedicated group of system administrators to ensure the reliability, security, and evolution of critical Defence systems. Reporting to the Engineering Manager, you will oversee the deployment and maintenance of hardware, software, and network components while ensuring compliance with Australian Government standards. Responsibilities The key responsibilities of the role will include, but is not limited to: Supervise and coordinate the System Administration team in maintaining deployable and fixed IT networks and associated ICT infrastructure, ensuring high availability, performance, and operational readiness across environments. Provide technical leadership and oversight for the development, introduction into service, and sustainment of the network, including the evolution of hardware, software, data, tools, and processes supporting ADF Mission Planning Systems (MPS). Direct the deployment, configuration, maintenance, and upgrade of server and workstation infrastructure, as well as internal virtual environments that support software development, testing, and operational requirements. Manage the monitoring, configuration, and security of network infrastructure, including routers, switches, and host-based firewalls, while ensuring effective backup procedures and recovery capabilities. Lead network security efforts, including treatment and reporting of breaches, and oversee the security accreditation process for MPS on IT networks. Guide the installation, configuration, testing, and deployment of system software, and provide support for resolving data-related issues specific to MPS. Collaborate with stakeholders to develop technical and operational solutions, and manage risks and issues within the operational support scope. Mentor, develop, and support team members to grow technical capability and maintain a collaborative, autonomous, and high-performing work environment. Review, update, and verify documentation to support compliance, project development, and sustainment activities. Qualifications, Skills and Experience Essential: Minimum of 3â5 yearsâ experience in IT support roles, including at least two years providing System Administration services within Australian Federal Government Departments, ideally in a Defence context. Holds tertiary or vocational qualifications in Network and Systems Administration or IT Engineering/Architecture, with practical experience in supporting Dell hardware (including PowerEdge servers), configuring deployable networks, managing MS Windows Server platforms, domain workstations, VMware vSphere ESXi environments, and executing data backup and recovery procedures. Demonstrated understanding of core network protocols and services such as DNS, DHCP, and TCP/IP, along with experience supporting software development environments and performing software and unit testing. Strong communication, interpersonal, and stakeholder engagement skills, with a proven ability to convey complex concepts clearly and accurately both in writing and verbally. Detail-oriented and highly articulate, with demonstrated experience working within or alongside the Defence Industry, particularly in the Aviation sector. Must be eligible to obtain and maintain an Australian Government Security Clearance (NV1 or higher).
