This role exists because the work is complex, high‐risk and technically demanding. It requires an electrical Project Manager who understands substations, transformers and synchronous condensers and has personally delivered them in the field.
If your background is genuinely electrical and you're comfortable owning safety, program and cost on site, this is a role with real scope and substance.
Role: Project Manager – Electrical / Substations
Reporting to: Senior Project Manager / Construction Director
Work Pattern: Weekday‐based role with site travel
Role Purpose
The Project Manager is responsible for the end‐to‐end delivery of electrical and substation construction works within a large, complex energy infrastructure program. The role has full accountability for safety, program, cost, quality and team performance across an assigned site or package and requires strong, hands‐on leadership. This position requires a genuine electrical background, with proven delivery experience across substations, transformers and synchronous condensers (syncons). It is not suitable for candidates with a purely civil or transmission‐only background.
Key Responsibilities
Project Delivery
* Own delivery of assigned electrical / substation scope from mobilisation through commissioning and handover.
* Develop and execute construction methodologies, staging plans and delivery strategies.
* Manage program, cost and risk, including recovery planning, variations and extensions of time.
* Work closely with commercial functions to control cost‐to‐complete and subcontractor performance.
Electrical & Substation Scope
* Lead construction activities associated with high‐voltage substations, switching stations and energy hubs.
* Oversee installation, integration, testing and commissioning of transformers, synchronous condensers and primary plant.
* Ensure compliance with design documentation, technical standards, grid requirements and commissioning protocols.
* Lead multi‐disciplinary site teams including Superintendents, Supervisors, Project Engineers, Site Engineers, HSE, Quality and site administration.
* Set clear expectations, drive accountability and maintain strong site culture.
* Provide visible, on‐site leadership with a focus on safety, productivity and delivery outcomes.
Safety, Quality & Stakeholder Management
* Champion a strong safety‐first culture and ensure full compliance with company HSE systems and statutory requirements.
* Ensure electrical works meet quality, testing and documentation standards.
* Act as the primary interface with internal stakeholders, subcontractors, designers and inspectors.
Key Outcomes
* Electrical and substation works delivered safely, on program and within budget.
* Successful installation and commissioning of transformers and synchronous condensers with no critical defects.
* High‐performing, stable site team with strong leadership and accountability.
* Effective management of risk, cost and schedule across the delivery lifecycle.
Required Experience & Background
Mandatory
* Degree‐qualified Electrical Engineer.
* Demonstrated Project Manager experience delivering substations or complex HV electrical infrastructure.
* Direct experience with transformers and synchronous condensers (installation, integration and/or commissioning).
* Proven delivery background on large‐scale energy or power infrastructure projects.
Preferred
* Experience working for Tier‐1 contractors or EPC delivery environments.
* Exposure to large, multi‐package or program‐based infrastructure projects.
* Comfortable operating in site‐led roles requiring regular travel.
Only candidates with proven electrical delivery experience will be considered. Civil only or transmission only backgrounds will not be a fit for this position.
For the right person, this role offers long‐term involvement in a major infrastructure program and the chance to lead meaningful, technically challenging work.
