About the Role:
My client is looking for a driven and detail-oriented Spot Trader to join their growing trading team. This position will play a central role in managing real-time and near-term electricity market positions, ensuring the portfolio is optimised while maintaining compliance with internal frameworks. The role requires a balance of analytical rigour, fast decision-making, and a strong understanding of the physical electricity market environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Portfolio & Stakeholder Engagement
 * Build and maintain constructive relationships with market operators, trading partners, and other key industry contacts.
 * Ensure operational readiness when new assets or counterparties are introduced.
Market Operations & Spot Trading
 * Execute trading strategies in the spot and short-term forward markets to maximise portfolio outcomes.
 * Monitor system conditions, price signals, and plant availability to inform dispatch and trading decisions.
 * Refine and adapt bidding approaches in line with risk and compliance requirements.
 * Contribute to operational coverage by participating in rostered trading shifts.
Planning & Reporting
 * Support enhancements to operational processes, reporting structures, and market procedures.
 * Provide insights into portfolio strategy, optimisation initiatives, and future product development.
 * Assist with the improvement of analytical tools and decision-support systems.
Performance & Market Insights
 * Track portfolio outcomes against internal and external performance benchmarks.
 * Analyse market fundamentals to identify emerging risks, price drivers, and opportunities.
 * Contribute to forecasting exercises, stress testing, and scenario planning.
Innovation & Continuous Improvement
 * Assist in the development and testing of trading models and optimisation techniques.
 * Use data-driven methods to improve forecasting and support trading decisions.
 * Explore opportunities in renewable integration, storage solutions, and other emerging technologies.
Skills & Experience:
 * Degree in economics, finance, engineering, computer science, or a related discipline.
 * Minimum of 2 years' experience in trading, dispatch, or portfolio optimisation within the Australian electricity market.
 * Strong understanding of market structures, dispatch mechanisms, and settlement processes.
 * Knowledge of real-time electricity market dynamics and ancillary services.
 * Excellent numerical and analytical skills with a proactive, problem-solving approach.
 * Ability to work effectively under pressure and manage competing priorities.
